Comprehensive biography about Joseph Ward (1838-1889), an American educator and missionary. Much of the biography focuses on the educational aspects of Ward's life and career. Authored by George Harrison Durand. Joseph Ward was sent to Dakota Territory as a missionary to help establish churches in Yankton, the capitol of said territory. He was instrumental in the founding of Yankton Academy and Yankton College. Ward also helped lead the movement for South Dakota's statehood. The following are some details about the inscriptions addressed to Walt Grossman. Front free endpaper has a former owner's gift inscription in black ink addressed to Grossman and is dated 1943. The front flyleaf following front free endpaper has multiple signatures in blue ink sending well wishes to Grossman; the names are Lillian M. Durand, Ruth M. Corison, [--?] Liege, Wolfgang Liege, Janice [Frieder?], Thelma Schmidt, Fred [Schneider?], Hans M. Poppe, Hugo Haig, [--?] Fisher, and "Windy." Half-title also has a gift inscription to Grossman and is written in blue ink by author George Harrison Durand. Durand's inscription reads, "With affectionate regards, G.
