Trade Paperback. Condition: Good+. Reprint Edition. 128 pp. A vintage mystery originally published by Doubleday, Doran & Co., this is an abridged version published in the Thriller Novel Classic series (#37), probably sometime during the early 1940s. Spine is somewhat slanted/curved, minor edgewear/bumping. Text is barely starting to yellow and is clean and unmarked. "Evelyn Chesney, the vicar's daughter, wasn't the sort to shed tears over the spectacle of her revered father making a fool of himself, but something was very much on her mind - so much on her mind that she was oblivious of the village burning with impatience to see the vicar with his new ex-chorus wife. When the vicar arrived with the wife, who called him Bopsie and sat on his knee, Evelyn wasn't there to welcome them. She didn't appear when sent for, and when a searching party was successful in locating her it was too late to care whether or not she had a flamboyant step-mother and a senile father. Another strange event in the placid community led up to an act of violence which left a village terrified and the police almost in a state of siege from panic-stricken citizens. It was only when a girl jeopardized her life by following a hunch, and a man played a game with his life at stake, that the mysterious murderer, the silent killer, was stopped."; 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

The septuagenarian vicar of Twitten has gone and done it. He has married a chorus girl, and he is returning unrepentant but panting to the vicarage. Meanwhile, his daughter, who has something on her mind but it's apparently not her father's unfortunate marriage, disappears. Most unusually, the chorus girl turns out to live up, or down, to the typical chorus-girl reputation. Deaths start occurring. A demented but chuckling villain appears at night. The heroine is brave and bright. The hero is dull and sensible. Inspector Bass drinks too much at the village pub and at the Twitten Manor Home for Inebriates, joining the home's owner, Dr. MacFarlane, who always has a bottle handy, while the murderer remains unapprehended. A thriller-type novel with a twist and some interesting characters. George Selmark is a pseudonym of Seldon Truss. Truss wrote only one novel under this name with a detective that Truss had written about under his own name. EB; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.
