[From front jacket flap]To Americans the word frontier usually evokes images of cowboys and Indians, longhorns and buffalo, and shoot-outs on Main Street?in short, the American West. Yet other countries, too, have had their frontiers, and the entire New World served as a frontier for Europeans after the fifteenth century. The study of frontiers that began with the works of Frederick Jackson Turner and Walter Prescott Webb has in recent years developed a comparative dimension. The five essays of this volume look at European expansion into Mexico, Canada, Brazil, Southern Africa, and Australia. The authors assess for their particular regions the effects of European trade and settlement on both the environment and the native peoples, the role of racial attitudes, the development of the economy and the characteristics of the labor force, the growth of frontier institutions, and the relation of the frontier region to the European ?metropolis.? While the essays are not explicitly comparative, they suggest a rich variety of comparative insights into the development of the frontier in world history. The authors of the essays and their contributions are Philip Wayne Powell, ?North America?s First Frontier, 1546-1603?; W.J. Eccles, ?The Frontiers of New France?; Warren Dean, ?Ecological and Economic Relationships in Frontier History: Sao Paulo, Brazil?; Leonard Thompson, ?The Southern African Frontier in Comparative Perspective?; and Robin W. Winks, ? Australia, the Frontier, and the Tyranny of Distance.?

ROOSEVELT AND HIS CRITICS, 1933-39, George Wolfskill, hardcover with unclipped dust jacket, stated 1st printing, 1969. BOOK CONDITION: near fine. The text block is in fine condition with no tears, marks, or dog ears. There is no bookplate or signature of a previous owner. Not a remainder or library book. The red cloth boards are in near fine condition. The dust jacket is in very good condition (slight crinkling along top and bottom edges, faded spine). 9 ½ x 6 ½, 386 pages, 29 ounces XX [From the inner flaps] That great betrayer and liar - Franklin Double-Crossing Roosevelt (Father Charles E. Coughlin). If you were a good honest man, Jesus Christ would not have crippled you (letter to the President). No slander is too vile, no canard too preposterous, to find voice among those who regard the President as their mortal enemy (Marquis W. Childs, journalist). Critics and criticism. That is what ALL BUT THE PEOPLE is about. Specifically it is a study of the critics of Franklin Roosevelt - who they were, what they were, what they criticized and why, and what (if anything) they did about it. But while authors George Wolfskill and John A. Hudson have shown Roosevelt and the New Deal as special targets of attack, they have also identified the sources and kinds of criticism with which any President must contend, the enemies he is likely to encounter. In general, the authors have moved along the spectrum from the irrational to the rational, from criticism that made little sense to criticism that made a great deal of sense. Some of the critics with whom they have dealt were decent, honorable men whose motives were above reproach, others were deranged individuals, obsessed by twisted and sinister motives. The period covered is 1933 to 1939, crucial years in which domestic affairs - depression, recovery, reform - strained the energies and riveted the attention of the country, years in which every word and every deed of the President were attacked by both Left and Right. ALL BUT THE PEOPLE is an effort to see Roosevelt and the New Deal through hostile eyes; to let his enemies speak for themselves. It is also an attempt to delineate a certain streak of madness in American political criticism which has received scant attention and to appraise the adverse effects of such criticism on the course of events.
