Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Hugely important work on transsexuality by an author who was assigned male gender at birth, served in the Royal Navy and practised as a male dentist before undergoing a sex change as an adult. She was the first trans woman in Britain to marry. The book is part autobiography, part scholarly study of an issue which was at the time poorly documented, little understood and highly taboo. Foreword by the sexologist Kenneth Walker. The book was never reprinted by Gollancz and most copies of an already small print run were either remaindered or pulped. This is the only copy in a dust-wrapper available worldwide at the time of listing. Blue cloth lettered in gilt with light foxing to page edges. Unclipped, protected dust-wrapper with minor wear at the corners. Very rare in this condition and deserving of a place in a major collection.

First edition. First edition, first printing. 319 pp. Bound in publisher's blue cloth with gilt lettering. About Very Good with sunning to spine and to top edge of front board, foxed edges, slightly musty smell; lacking dust jacket. An uncommon work on gender transitions and the philosophy of gender published before the much better-known book The Transsexual Phenomenon by Harry Benjamin. The author was born intersex on the outskirts of London, assigned male by obstetricians but personally identified as female. She underwent gender-confirming surgery in 1957, practiced dentistry, married a duke named Somerset (a legal first for a woman who had undergone a gender transition), and wrote two books in her 90 years on earth.
