Library binding (formerly of Chelsea and Lewisham Libraries): half red cloth with marbled paper covered boards. 2 vols in 1, dated 1660 and 1663; 257 and 442pp, each with unpaginated index at rear. Text block edges speckled red. Pages are rather marked with pronounced tanning and foxing, plus thumbing. Gutters somewhat cracked with some tape reinforcement. Pen marginalia to title page. Owner has added page numbers in pencil to indices. Various mild stains and marks. Several library stamps within. Notable water stain and single insect hole from vol.II p133 to end. Corresponding staining to block edges. Boards have some edge wear, with mild bumping to corners (moderate peeling of edges), while spine ends are a tad crushed and rubbed. Slightly scratched, rubbed and marked overall. Boards slightly bowed. Several slight edge dents. Large, unsightly Dewey numbering to spine.

Part One: [No halftitle] Frontispiece (Owner's name in early handwriing at top "Alex: Butterworths Books"). Rubricated title page: 8 and 258 and 6 pages. Part Two: Halftitle, Frontispiece, title page 10 and 442 and 22 pages. Collated complete. Small hole in centre of leaf 121/2 removes a single letter from each page. Fairly clean tight text but edges quite dust marked and browned with slight dustiness to some pages in top margin. Endpapers worn. Rear endpapers from some earlier printed book. Bound in old full leather with raised bands. Top of spine bit chipped. Small stain to front cover. Extremities a little rubbed but covers holding well. Modern title label.

Condition: Good/Very Good. pp (14) + 1-136 ( first part) ; (8) + 137-348 + (20) (second part) ; ( 10) + 159 + (15) ( third part) The first part, a history of the Civil War, first published in 1649, was written by George Bate ( physician to Charles 1, Oliver Cromwell and also Charles 2), he also wrote the second part which covers the years 1649-59. Following the death of Bates in 1668 the third part, covering the years 1659-69, was written by Thomas Skynner ,also a physician . This copy is internally in very good condition; the binding is tight and looks at some stage to have been strengthened. The cover, early perhaps contemporary, is moderately marked and scuffed with an owner's reference number on the spine; front hinge cracked but holding. Size: 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall.
