Paperback. Condition: Good. This is the 10th-Anniversary Edition of Finn, with a new introduction by Jared Leto. In this masterful debut, Jon Clinch takes us on a journey into the history and heart of one of American literature's most brutal and mysterious figures: Huckleberry Finn's father. The result is a deeply original tour de force that springs from Twain's classic novel but takes on a fully realized life of its own. Finn sets a tragic figure loose in a landscape at once familiar and mythic. It begins and ends with a lifeless body-flayed and stripped of all identifying marks-drifting down the Mississippi. The circumstances of the murder, and the secret of the victim's identity, shape Finn's story as they will shape his life and his death. Along the way Clinch introduces a cast of unforgettable characters: Finn's terrifying father, known only as the Judge; his sickly, sycophantic brother, Will; blind Bliss, a secretive moonshiner; the strong and quick-witted Mary, a stolen slave who becomes Finn's mistress; and of course young Huck himself. In daring to re-create Huck for a new generation, Clinch gives us a living boy in all his human complexity-not an icon, not a myth, but a real child facing vast possibilities in a world alternately dangerous and bright. Finn is a novel about race; about paternity in its many guises; about the shame of a nation recapitulated by the shame of one absolutely unforgettable family. Above all, Finn reaches back into the darkest waters of America's past to fashion something compelling, fearless, and new. Praise for Finn A brutal, shocking and epic look in the mirror for all Americans. - Jared Leto, from the introduction Ravishing.and a stand-alone marvel of a novel. Grade: A. - Entertainment Weekly Clinch treads dangerous ground in making one of America's greatest novels his jumping-off point, but he brings it off magnificently. - Dallas Morning News Clinch's riverbank Missouri feels postapocalyptic, and his Pap Finn is a crazed yet wily survivor in a polluted landscape. - Newsweek Finn strikes its most original chords in its bold imagining of possibilities left unexplored by Huckleberry Finn. - Austin American-Statesman An inspired riff on one of literature's all-time great villains. - New Orleans Times-Picayune A jolting companion to the mischievous antics of Huckleberry Finn. - Christian Science Monitor A triumph of successful plotting, convincing characterization and lyrical prose. - Rocky Mountain News Shocking and charming, A folk-art masterpiece. - New York Post Disturbing and darkly compelling. - Hartford Courant Jon Clinch pulls off the near impossible in his new novel, which brings Huck's dad to life in all his terrible humanness. - Winston-Salem Journal Every fan of Twain's masterpiece will want to read this inspired spin-off, which could become an unofficial companion volume. - Library Journal, starred review Finn is as dark, as brutal, as ambivalent, and as insane as the history and legacy of American racial slavery. - Mary Gaitskill, author of Veronica Clinch's tale is not only filled with echoes of the great American classic to which it is tied; it is destined to become one itself. - Sara Gruen, author of Water for Elephants.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. From the origins of the SAS behind Rommel's lines in the Sahara through the Malayan emergency, the Arabian skirmishes in Oman and Yemen, the debacle in Gibraltar and the regiment's unique role in the Gulf War, Tony Geraghty examines their successes and failures, the different ways successive British governments have exploited their expertise, their training methods and the skills the men acquire. He has spoken to the soldiers and officers who took part in the SAS' many operations, gaining insight into their activities, philosophy and morale. The author includes material on the Falklands campaign, the shoot to kill debate and previously unknown facts of the SAS' activity during the Gulf War. He has spoken to those who operated far behind the Iraqi lines and obtained previously unpublished photographs of their presence there. As with the original edition, this is a portrayal of a regiment always on call for the riskier military activities and who occupy a special place in the British Army. Tony Geraghty was the Sunday Times Defence Correspondent during the 1970s.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. The vast expansion of commercial and politicised warfare - in the wake of the invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq - is examined in this enthralling, highly controversial book. The freelance soldier, whether fighting for money or an adopted case, has always been a fascinating but little understood phenomenon. Never more so than now. For some, the mercenary is heroic; for those who do not know the euphoria of surviving a battle, he is a bloodthirsty killer. Tony Geraghty's book reveals the truth about their lives.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. The authors of this collection are seven older women from diverse backgrounds who are members of a long-standing Hudson Valley writing group composed of academics, a social worker, a psychiatric nurse, a teacher, and a lawyer. Some are retired, some are still working, some are musicians. All are volunteers, activists, and artists. The sections of the book--Remembrance, Joy, Visibility, Resistance, Resilience, Transformation, Aging, and Bearing Witness--grew from the authors' individual passions and from their collective perspective of being women-of-a-certain-age in a culture that tends to render older women invisible, irrelevant. This collection is filled with honest, insistent poetry and prose that demands to be heard by readers of all ages, genders, and perspectives. …

Hardback. Condition: Very Good. Advances in medicine have made possible better treatments for widespread, familiar human illnesses like cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. Yet there are thousands of much less common diseases, most of genetic origin, each classed as rare because it afflicts only a small number of people. These patient groups were long ignored by a pharmaceutical industry that judged them too small to provide a return on the investment needed to develop an effective remedy. Yet these orphaned diseases collectively caused misery and expense, often far greater than did more common ailments, for tens of millions of individuals and their families. Forty years ago, a revolution that transformed the prospects of patients with rare diseases was lit by three sparks. The passage of the 1983 U.S. Orphan Drug Act resulted from public pressure brought by rare disease patients, their families, and advocates. The AIDS epidemic triggered additional activism, compounded when patients with the rare disease hemophilia became HIV-positive after infusion of tainted blood products. And the third spark was the emergence in the early 1980s of biotechnology companies like Genentech, Amgen, and Biogen employing then-new genetic engineering instead of conventional approaches to pharmaceutical development. Soon after, Genzyme became the first company to develop a treatment for a rare genetic disorder, Gaucher disease, which would come to transform the industry. Jim Geraghty has been a passionate participant in the orphan drug revolution since its inception--a leader in the field as a strategy consultant, biotechnology executive, and venture entrepreneur. His book is in part a history, with eyewitness accounts of advances as they occurred and portraits of the pioneering scientists and physicians, tireless activists, and visionary business leaders who made the revolution happen. And it tells deeply personal stories of patients and parents willing to risk new, untried therapies. But Geraghty also uses his exceptional experience and vantage point to look forward to the immense promise of the newest technologies like gene therapy and gene editing for the treatment of patients today and tomorrow. He concludes with thoughtful consideration of important questions. Why do drugs to treat orphan diseases cost so much? How can we ensure they are affordable? How can their effectiveness be responsibly assessed? And how can access to them be expanded internationally? This book graphically and poignantly illustrates how far an important healthcare revolution has come and reminds us that if not nurtured, it could end before its immense promise has been fulfilled.…
