Gerard, John (illustrator). small 4to. Gray paper covered boards opening from either end with pages accordian style. 10 leaves printed on both sides. Limited to 20 numbered copies signed by Gerard and Best. Text and Images by Fritz Best. A double-sided accordion fold book with pulp paper images and text by Fritz Best, produced in collaboration with John Gerard on handmade papers of cotton. Images and text for Tag on one side of the book, and images and text for Nacht on the other. Grey endboards with title. "Day and Night was the result of an invitation to Fritz Best to make a book in the paper medium in my Berlin workshop. He had been in and out of the workshop for months, seen how many of the techniques function, but still had many questions. The theme he chose was the departure from Berlin, as he was to leave that year back to London and I was to move to the Rhineland. The book reflects all of the chaotic conditions in Berlin: traffic, dogs, the remains of the wall, office work and ends with a relaxing bottle of beer. All of the images are done in paper pulp using stencil techniques; the text was printed in silver, using nylon cliches. This is Fritz Best's first book." - Gerard. Gray paper covered boards opening from either end with pages accordian style.

1 vol. in-plano (475 x 363 mm) of: [7] ff including 3 color plates numbered and signed by the artist, copy on Velin d'Arche n° 190 of 280. (transfer marks opposite the illustrations). Cover printed in black on thick gray embossed Japanese paper, unbound. Rare copy of this collection of poems composed by sculptor Gérard Voisin and illustrated by painter John Christoforou. The author of the poems, Gérard Voisin, is a French sculptor and poet born in 1934 in Nantes who was a friend of photographer Robert Doisneau, singer Claude Nougaro, and painter Corneille. At the age of 14, Gérard Voisin was hired at the city's foundries and at the same time became involved in union activism and poetic writing. In the early 1960s, the working-class artist squatted in an abandoned house. He began carving pieces of wood with a knife, turning them into faces. In the 1970s, Gérard Voisin moved to the capital and frequented artists close to the "CoBrA movement." While continuing to write his poems, he developed a passion for African art. By sculpting wood and bronze, bodies, and desire, he felt close to it. He campaigned for the preservation of the memory of slavery and the colonies, and collaborated with artists from the African continent. In 2002, he created a monument commemorating the abolition of slavery, entitled "Tendresse, Égalité, Fraternité" (2002) in Saint-Herblain (Loire-Atlantique). He was named UNESCO Artist for Peace in 2005. A collector, Gérard Voisin has amassed thousands of books and magazines, including a library devoted to the slave trade, 30,000 cut papers, and 7,000 postcards on sub-Saharan Africa. The author of the three lithographs illustrating our book is the French painter of Greek origin, born in London, John Christoforou (1921-2014). He was marked by his two years of service in the Royal Air Force during World War II, on rescue missions at sea for victims of war and cyclones raging in the Indian Ocean. In 1949, he had his first solo exhibition at the Twenty Brook Street Gallery in London. In 1951, he stayed in Paris, where he discovered all the major museums. In 1953, he returned to London, where he exhibited at the Gimpel Fils Gallery. In 1957, he moved to Paris and also worked in Aix-en-Provence with the sculptor Marius Bruel. In 1971: exhibition at the Galerie Vercamer, Paris, with Arman, Enrico Baj, Mandeville, Friedensreich Hundertwasser, Charles Lapicque, Alberto Magnelli, Roberto Matta, and Georges Noël. In 1974: exhibition devoted to Christoforou's work on the theme of Night and Nothingness at the Musée Galliera in Paris. P.
