It was tersely introduced to readers as a 'private house with office in Bad Nauheim', but it was immediately obvious that this was a built manifesto. What appeared was a strictly… symmetrically articulated, steeply rising façade, emanating dignity and composure. It also seemed able to manage without windows, which further enhanced its austere elegance. And then there were the strikingly slender, sharp-angled wall elements, which seemed captivatingly graceful, or even delicate and fragile -- as though folded from paper. The fact is that, long before Gilles Deleuze had cast his spell on a new generation of aesthetically ambitious architects, Johannes Peter Hölzinger was putting his folding skills into practice as a matter of course.

Entgegen der Erwartung vieler Besucher, die nach Deutschland kommen, beweist die architektonische Kultur dieses Landes eine Vielfalt, die ein…iges Erstaunen hervorruft. Sicherlich gibt es hier wie anderenorts die weitverbreiteten, charakterlosen Bauten geschäftstüchtiger ?Architekturfabriken", die zumeist von ebenso weitverbreiteten und nicht minder geschäftstüchtigen Großunternehmen in Auftrag gegeben wurden. Doch findet sich daneben ein erstaunlicher architektonischer Gestaltungsreichtum, der zu einem guten Teil auf die kleinteilige, föderative Struktur Deutschlands zurückzuführen ist. So begünstigen beispielsweise die Architektenkammern der einzelnen Bundesländer die Weiterentwicklung rudimentär existierender lokaler Bautraditionen. Beeindruckender noch erscheint freilich der Beitrag ausländischer Architekten. Nicht zuletzt ihnen ist es zu verdanken, daß man von einer neuen Baukultur in Deutschland sprechen darf. Über die nach wie vor große Anzahl offener Wettbewerbe erhielten international renommierte Architekten wie Alvar Aalto (in den fünfziger Jahren) und Richard Meier (in den achtziger Jahren) Aufträge für Kulturzentren und Museen. Ohne Frage hat das Beispiel ihrer Entwürfe einen starken Einfluß auf die deutschen Kollegen ausgeübt und darüber hinaus auch den internationalen Architekturdiskurs mitgeprägt. Wohl in keinem anderen Land gibt es eine derartige Dichte von Bauwerken, die von europäischen und nordamerikanischen Architekten stammen. Und es sieht ganz so aus, als würde in Deutschland die Praxis, ambitionierte ausländische Büros mit repräsentativen Bauvorhaben zu beauftragen, trotz der allmählich nachlassenden Konjunktur der Baubranche beibehalten. Was aber sind die Gründe hierfür? Bei näherer Betrachtung der westdeutschen Bauentwicklung zeigt sich, daß die Wiederaufbauphase in diesem Land durch die Realisierung ehrgeiziger Kulturbauten ihr Ende fand. Nachdem mit der Errichtung von Wohnungen und Gemeinschaftsbauten (Schulen, Kindergärten, Hospitäler und Bürgerhäuser etc.) die Elementarbedürfnisse der Nachkriegsgesellschaft befriedigt worden waren, durfte man sich nunmehr luxuriösen Bauaufgaben wie der Realisierung von Museen, Theatern und Konzerthallen widmen. Nach einer ersten Welle von Aufträgen dieser Art in den späten sechziger und frühen siebziger Jahren, die nur erst wenige ausländische Entwurfsbüros erreichte, konnten im Sog der Diskussion um die sogenannte Postmoderne neue und intensivere Verbindungen zur internationalen Architektenschaft geknüpft werden. Erleichtert wurden diese sicher auch durch die Verkürzung von Reisezeiten. Bedeutete noch für Alvar Aalto die Überbrückung der Entfernung Helsinki?Wolfsburg eine lange Tagesreise, die ungern in Kauf genommen wurde, gehören heutzutage lange Distanzen zwischen Büro und Baustelle längst zur Normalität des Architekten-Alltags. Entsprechend darf es uns nicht wundern, daß beispielsweise die in London wirkende Zaha Hadid, der Portugiese Alvaro Siza und Frank Gehry, der sein Büro in Kalifornien führt, spektakuläre Bauwerke für die kleine Stadt Weil am Rhein entworfen haben. Oder daß Architekten wie Giorgio Grassi, Renzo Piano, Daniel Libeskind und Jean Nouvel in Berlin tätig sind.
