Gerlach (1866-1935) lebte die ersten Jahrzehnte seines Lebens durchaus in den Bahnen seines Standes: Studium der Rechtswissenschaften, Staatsdienst, Redakteuer des "Deutschen Adelsblattes", politische Betätigung im Dunstkreis des christlich-sozialen, antisemitischen Flügels der Konservativen um Adolf Stöcker. Ab 1896 wandelte er sich unter dem Einfluss Friedrich Naumanns zum Liberalen, später auch zum überzeugten Pazifisten, der aktiv für die Demokratie der Weimarer Republik eintrat. 1932 übernahm er für den inhaftierten Carl von Ossietzky die Chefredaktion der "Weltbühne" und schlug ihn erfolgreich für den Friedensnobelpreis vor. 1933 ging er ins Exil nach Österreich, dann nach Frankreich. Seine Erinnerungen sind episodenhaft gegliedert und tragen Kapitelüberschriften wie "Das Junkerparadies", "Meine Prozesse", "Adolf Stoecker", "Hammerstein und die Konservativen", "Friedrich Nauman", "Sozialdemokratische Größen", "Juden und Antisemiten", "Frauen und Frauenrechtlerinnen", "Von Rechts nach Links". Mit bissigem Humor schildert er die Wahlmanipulationen der Großgrundbesitzer oder in "Kaiser Wilhelm als Weidmann" den organisierten "Massenmord" an Hasen und Enten. - Sehr gutes Exemplar.
