This richly painted miniature depicts King David playing a psaltery within a large historiated initial "A" from a Gradual, introducing the chant Ad te levavi for the First Sunday of Advent. On the verso, the continuation of the liturgy appears with the Alleluia chant Ostende nobis, Domine, misericordiam tuam, further confirming the leaf's use within the Advent Mass. The image of David as musician, prophet, psalmist, and king visually reinforces the psalmic nature of the chant at the heart of the liturgical year. David is portrayed in regal attire: a purple robe lined with fur, a green undercoat, and a red cap beneath his golden crown. His beard and contemplative gaze give solemnity, while his hands delicately pluck the strings of a gilded psaltery resting across his lap. The deep blue letter "A" is set against a shimmering gold ground enlivened with white filigree sprays. A bold green-and-red border frames the composition, a stylistic hallmark of Augsburg illumination in the later fifteenth century. Produced in a sophisticated Swabian workshop, likely for monastic or noble patronage, this miniature exemplifies the technical and artistic standards of Augsburg, a major center of book production.
