Add to basketBritish aquatints of the Rhine for South Americans --- Exceptionally rare edition in Spanish of one of the most successful illustrated books of the time, specifically conceived for South America: a remarkable example of transatlantic commercial publishing. "Following the capture of Buenos Aires by the private enterprise of Commodore Sir Home Popham and Colonel Beresford in 1806, and the sending home of 1,100,000 worth of 'Treasure', paraded through the streets of London in eight wagons, each drawn by six horses, British interest in South America had boomed". Even though the British forces were pushed back the next year, a vast number of British merchants went to Buenos Aires, and "by 1824 there were at least 3,000 British subjects [. A] mania for speculation in South America swept Britain, huge sums being invested in companies and in South American Government Bonds" (Abbey). The celebrated London publisher -and acute businessman- Rudolph Ackermann (1764-1834) was among those English entrepreneurs to expand his business into the New World: from 1823 he published the magazine Variedades o Mensagero de Londres and in 1824, he sent his young son George (1803-91) to Mexico so that he could open a bookshop and establish sales outlets in Mexico City, Caracas, Bogota, Guatemala City, Lima and Buenos Aires. This allowed Ackermann to become a leading publisher in Spanish in Latin America: "Ackermann. published over 100 books in Spanish, including textbooks which played an important part in the education of the newly independent republics" (Ford). By the end of 1828 however he had to shut down his business in Latin America because of "the volatile economic and political climate and the frequent pirating and selling of his books by the French" (Harris). Ackermann included a Spanish version of Gerning's bestseller in his output aimed at South America, and stated this clearly on the title page: the book is published in London by Ackermann, "y en su establecimiento en Megico : asimismo en Colombia, en Buenos-Ayres, Chile, Peru, y Guatemala". A Picturesque Tour along the Rhine, first published with illustrations in 1820, was one of his most successful illustrated publications, "perhaps the most famous magnificent work of the early Rhine Romanticism" (Schmitt). The new publication includes a title, an introduction and plates explanations in Spanish, whereas the 24 plates are the same as the first English edition, all engraved in aquatint after watercolours by the late German artist Christian Georg Schütz Jr. (1758-1823), and here subtle hand-colouring from Ackerman's celebrated London workshops and still with English captions dated 1819. The original German text, Die Rheingegenden von Mainz bis Cölln, had been written by the German diplomat Johann Isaak von Gerning (1767-1837) and first came out in German without illustrations in 1819. Abbey suggests that Ackermann was already working on his edition at that time as he commissioned the text and plates in 1819. Gerning's work opened Ackermann's famed series of "Picturesque Voyages" (1820-28) that would later include the explorations of the Seine, Ganges and Thames among others. "There is no more attractive figure [in the publishing world] than that of Rudolph Ackermann, through whose extraordinary enterprise and spirit of adventure, aquatint was successfully applied to the illustration of books" (Prideaux). The book offers attractive topographical descriptions of the so-called Middle Rhine from Mainz to Cologne, as well as short insights about the local history and traditions (with for example a full plate showing a salmon fishery), which altogether contributed to the romanticisation of the region, particularly favoured by English tourists. For the Spanish edition, Gerning's text was replaced with an introductory text and explanatory notes by the writer and educator José Joaquín de Mora. This publication was very timely, resonating with the growing local romantic aspirations which were particularly fulfilled in the works of one of the main Latin American Romantic authors, Esteban Echeverría (180551), in the 1830s. Very rare: this edition mentioned, but not owned by Abbey. Worldcat could not locate any copy in US or European libraries, showing only one copy, at the Biblioteca Nacional de Mexico. No copy traced in COPAC, none in the BL. Apparently only one example at auction in recent decades, in 2010. A fine, clean example, in contemporary binding and with the original, subtle colouring keeping its lovely freshness. Provenance: Physical description:Folio (35 x 28 cm). 8 pp. incl. title, introduction leaf and plate explanations, and 24 aquatint plates by Sutherland and Havell after Schütz, all with original hand-colouring and some with gum arabic highlights, title with 1817 watermark, plates with 1820, 1831 or none (most). Contemporary half calf over marbled boards, flat spine gilt in compartments, leather label to upper cover framed and lettered in gilt. Condition:Skilfully and sympathetically rebacked retaining most of the original spine, corners repaired, leather minimally stained; occasional minor foxing or staining, barely affecting images, the plates overall very fresh. The book describes a trip down the Rhine on that part of the river generally considered most romantic and charming, "from Mentz to Cologne, and of the Bathing-Places of Wiesbaden and Embs". The account contains not only topographical descriptions, but considerable historical information and details of popular traditions, the book being written "with a view chiefly to the information of travellers of cultivated minds who may be induced to visit this interesting portion of Germany (Preface of the Author)". The original German edition was published in Wiesbaden in 1819 as Die Rheingegenden von Mainz bis Cölln, without illustrations. The third issue, with the plates numbered in top right corner. First Edition. (ACKERMANN, Rudolph) GERNING, Baron Johann Isaac von. A Picturesque Tour Along the Rhine, from Mentz to Cologne. London: R. Ackermann, 1820. Folio (11-1/2 by 13-1/2 inches), period-style full green straight-grain morocco, gilt-decorated spine and boards. $8800.First edition, first issue, of one of AckermannÕs wonderful Picturesque Tours, beautifully illustrated with 24 hand-colored folio aquatints and large folding map. A lovely copy, beautifully bound to style. In the history of book production "there is no more attractive figure than that of Rudolph Ackermann, through whose extraordinary enterprise and spirit of adventure, aquatint was successfully applied to the illustration of books" (Prideaux, 120-23). One of Ackermann's most lucrative projects was his remarkable Picturesque Tours, a series of seven books produced between 1820-28. This is his Tour Along the Rhine, with beautifully hand-colored aquatints by Daniel Havell and Thomas Sutherland after paintings by Christian Georg Schutz, depicting views of Mentz, the Castle of Furstenberg, the Church of Johannes, Pfalz Castle and the town of Kaub, the salmon fishery at Lurley, Coblentz, Bornhofen, Cologne and other sites along the river. The plates were pulled and hand-colored in the Ackermann studio, whose reputation for producing splendid illustrated publications and disseminating fine aquatint prints spanned over two centuries. The folding map shows the course of the Rhine from Mentz to Cologne. With accompanying text by Baron von Gerning describing the history and culture of the area (first published in German in 1819, without illustrations). First issue, without plate numbers in the top right corners. Tooley notes that plates 2 and 3 have variants dated either September or October; Abbey argues persuasively that to call either state an issue "must remain doubtful," particularly given that large-paper copies have also been seen with the two plates dated October. At any rate, the quality of plates in either state are the same high standard; Abbey notes that "there are definitely some later issues of the book, and these can be recognized by having plate numbers at the top right-hand corner. The impressions in these plates are poor and the coloring less good" (Abbey 217). This copy has plates 2 and 3 dated October, but most importantly none of the plates bear numbers in the upper right. Text watermarked 1817 and 1818; plates watermarked 1818 and 1819. Abbey, Travel 217. Prideaux, 337. Tooley 234. Title page neatly rehinged, plates fine and fresh, hand-coloring vivid. An excellent, attractive copy of this beautifully illustrated work.

By 1820, Rudolph Ackermann (1764-1834) had established himself as one of the premium publishers of colour plate books in Britain, largely thanks to a number of works on English topography starting with The Microcosm of London in 1808. A Picturesque Tour Along the Rhine was the first title in Ackermann's "Picturesque Tour" series and was issued in six monthly parts. While Gerning's text was originally published in German in 1819, the introduction makes it clear that Ackermann was already working on his illustrated edition. Abbey suggests that "that the text was commissioned by Ackermann, as were the views for the plates". Abbey Travel 217; Tooley 234. Quarto (343 x 280 mm). With 24 hand-coloured aquatints and one large folding map with colour highlights. Includes the list of subscribers. Finely bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe in dark green half morocco, green buckram boards, raised bands, spine lettered in gilt, compartments and boards ruled in single gilt fillets, top edge gilt, pale green endpapers. Spine slightly sunned, boards a touch scuffed and rubbed, minor offsetting from plates, occasional light spotting, a couple of creases to the Bornhofen plate and a small repair to the margin on the Biebrich plate.
