Hardcover. Condition: Very Good-. Very attractive 19th century bookplate of Thomas Lauth, also a bookplate from the Surgeon General's Office Library - stamped "Withdrawn - Natl Lib of Med". An early treatise on the sources, symptoms and treatment of dropsy. Internally near fine, Marbled paper covered boards large chipat head & edge of spine, corners. Still a nice example of this Rare medical treatise. OCLC 1157603549 Felice Giuseppe Geromini (1792-1858) studied medicine at the University of Pavia, the stronghold of the so-called "dottrina of counterstimolo" -- a logical-speculative method countering the practical empirism on the origin and evolution of diseases. He received his degree in 1812, then went to Milan, to study with Giovanni Rasori at the Policlinico of Milan. Disappointed by the encounter with Rasori, Geromini returned to Cremona, with a decisive aversion to any form of medical dogmatism. After failing to become a doctor at the S. Corona, he dedicated himself to the writing this treatise "On the Genesis and Care of the Hydrope," published in 1816. In this work, he clearly affirms the absolute influence of the diathesis in the appearance and development of the pathological state considered, G. openly rejects the dogmatic approach in the clinical methodology. The medical community was alarmed by his nonconformist doctrine, resulting in his failure to obtain a position at the hospital of Cremona. Geromini managed to get a position at a suburban facility in 1818 and finally in 1819 was appointed doctor at a girls orphanage and vaccinator of the city. Geromini's insistence on examining only the obvious facts, in the light of reason, regardless of any preconceived position the observed phenomena, certainly responded to a correct logical and scientific approach. Unfortunately, in his writings Geromini's passionate and sometimes eccentric critical language proved a barrier to acceptance of his ideas. His works, well known and generally opposed in Italy, were appreciated for the doctrinal bases and the originality of the ideas especially by some French doctors. ;
