In de moderne verkiezingscampagne spelen de affiches bij lange na niet meer de rol die zij in het verleden hebben vervuld. De kleurrijke affiches uit de verzuilingstijd waren ideologisch zwaar geladen.In het interbellum kwamen de socialisctische symbolen als rode vlag, fakkel en morgenrood, en communistische als hamer en sikkel, veelvuldig voor, evenals afbeeldingen van strijdbare arbeiders. Tegenstanders van de SDAP en CPN grepen ook naar de metafoor: op de affiches van de katholieke en liberale partijen werd het socialisme meermalen verbeeld als een draak.Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog werden de affiches zakelijker. Met de ontzuiling en de opkomst van de televisie verdween in de loop van de jaren zestig de symboliek vrijwel helemaal. De verbeeldend verpakte ideologische boodschap maakte voorgoed plaats voor koppen van lijsttrekkers in een uitgekiende huisstijl. Het beeldscherm bood veel meer mogelijkheden om de partij te verkopen dan een poster op een verkiezingsbord. Deze ontwikkeling van de verkiezingsaffiches van kunstwerk tot aanplakbiljet wordt uitvoerig beschreven én getoond in Om de stembusDe vele afbeeldingen in kleur geven bovendien een scherp beeld van de partijpolitieke verhoudingen door de tijd heen. Op 3 oktober 1966 presenteerden acht jonge PvdA-leden, onder wie de latere bestuurder Han Lammers en de toekomstige partijvoorzitter en burgemeester van Rotterdam Andre van der Louw, het boekje 10 over rood.
