Gerstäcker traveled around the world but mostly through South and North America, this book contains his memoirs, produced from diary entries, of one such journey. The first ten chapters detail his travels at sea and in South America. The second portion covers in vivid detail his mining experiences. In addition to providing excellent observations of daily life, Gerstäcker's documents the activities of Germans in the gold fields, the difficulties of being a foreigner, and the miner's tax. Includes 2*double paged tinted lithographs. viiii+290pp. Bound in contemporary red morocco with elaborate blind tamped borders and central lozenge. Spine has four raised bands and the panels are elaborately decorated. Heavy rubbing to edges of boards, scuffed at corners. Boards have been professionally rebacked. Gilt gauffered decoration to all page edges. Gilt dentelles. Previous owners name - S Samuel written on free end paper and dated 23rd June, 1855. End papers have been replaced, one original remains loose.
