Robert Gerstmann, 1896 - 1960, was born in Vienna and trained as an electrical engineer. In 1924 he emigrated to Chile, where he abondoned engineering in favor of photography, a passion he acquired in his youth. He traveled thoughout Chile and Bolivia and amassed several thousand glass plate negatives, many of which were produced in his books on Chile and Bolivia.
