The Vietnam War has been explained, explained away and debated endlessly in terms of foreign policy, economics, military strategy and humanitarian concern. Ironically, what has been all but overlooked is one of the most important components of the complex Vietnam problem: the role which religion plays, both North and South, in that tortured country. In an effort to inform the Western reader of the religious dimensions of Vietnam, Piero Gheddo, an Italian priest-journalist, has written The Cross and the Bo-tree. He bases his book on personal observations and on hundreds of interviews with religious figures, Buddhist, Catholic and Protestant. He is concerned to show that in addition to the con-tending giants there is a third force?the Buddhist and Catholic popu-lace, whose commitment to their faith runs far deeper than their loyalty to any ideology or their allegiance to any political regime. Unless both military and political strategists take into account this religious "force," Gheddo maintains, a real end to the war is impracticable and an endur-ing peace illusory. He suggests, for example, that any viable government in South Vietnam must represent an authentic coalition which includes the NLF and Vietcong. The Catholics of Vietnam must abandon their ritualistic and sterile anti-Communism and commit themselves to those social and economic reforms which the Communists rightly call for. The Buddhists must be prepared to enter into genuine dialogue with the Catholics, heal the divisions among their own followers and employ their tremendous moral force to heal the wounds of war and forge a religiously pluralistic, politically non-aligned nation. There is scarcely a page, then, which either 'hawk' or 'dove' can read with complete composure?perhaps the best warrant that Piero Gheddo has done well the journalist's work of unsettling assumptions and pro-viding fact as the whetstone of opinion.
