Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 8vo (24 cm), XV, 199 pp., 12 plates in color, 72 plates in half-tone. Laminated publisher's wrappers with flaps (minor shelf-wear). Second edition (first published in 1970) of this scholarly study of Armenian manuscript illumination from the ninth to thirteenth centuries, based on the celebrated collection of approximately 4,000 manuscripts preserved at the Mekhitarist Congregation of San Lazzaro in Venice. With a preface by Sirarpie Der Nersessian. The work is arranged in two parts: an introductory survey discussing the origins and stylistic characteristics of Armenian miniature painting, its principal scriptoria and regional schools, and the history of the San Lazzaro library; followed by detailed studies of thirteen illuminated manuscripts, including the Gospel of Queen Mlkhe, the Gospels of Trebizond, Adrianople, Horomos, Karberd, Havowcthar, and Teodosiopoli, as well as a Psalter, a Ritual, and the Book of Ordinations. Each codex is described individually with historical commentary and analysis of its miniatures, decoration, and iconography. Illustrated with 84 plates comprising 121 figures, many in color and reproduced at natural size.
