First printing of the first paperback edition. Browning to white panel on spine which has a heavy surface wrinklie and also has some rubbing at the top and bottom. There is blotchy brown spotting to the white panels on the front and back covers. Browning to insides of covers and pages which are otherwise clean and unmarked.

ML 109.1; Toledano Binding Style 11, Dust Jacket Back J1, dark gray Rockwell Kent endpapers. Fine in a Good+ Dust Jacket. The Text Block is clean, white, tight, straight and square with no markings of any kind. The Binding is full green cloth, color uniform throughout, with bright gilt title, etc., to the spine, gray Rockwell Kent endpapers with a prior owner's name faintly on the front free endpaper and no other markings, and all corners square and mostly sharp. The Dust Jacket is bright with colors uniform throughout, and mostly intact with considerable wear at the corners and folds, and a large tear across the front panel closed from behind with archival, pH neutral materials, but only after removal of scotch tape that left a stain on the inside of the panel. The original price ($2.45) is intact on the front flap. See the photos. 278, [ii] pages. 4 3/4" x 7 1/4". An absurdist novel set in Oran, Algeria, originally published in French in 1947 by Gallimard as La Peste, the novel stresses the inability of individuals to affect their own destinies. The Stuart Gilbert translation first appeared in 1948 in the British publication by Hamish Hamilton.

This 1956 edition is "completely different from the 3-volume History of Modern Painting published some years ago." 339 pages; most pages are dated at top for easy reference. Book has small smudge on front flyleaf, no other marks, creases or tears; very faint darkening along page edges. Jacket back has large chip on back, tear secured on reverse with clear removable tape, edge wear at head of spine. (images show defects) 10" x 13 1/2". Book weighs over 6 lbs, sorry no international mailings.

The page edges are browned and the text block is a little uneven at the edges with the final section protruding from the back cover - binding secure however. Browning to insides of covers and around the edges of the pages which are otherwise unmarked.

Binding good, first end page is tender on front on back. Last end page is loose from spine about 1/3 of the way from top.
