Add to basketFirst and only edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author's wife on the front free endpaper, "To Emleen Powell, In remembrance of a Friend she esteemed and valued from Mrs Thomas Gillilan, with her love. March 1912". This scarce and animated firsthand account of General Godwin's march on Martaban and Rangoon is found in… the British Library and at Brown University only. Gillilan (1819-1900) enlisted in the 1830s and made captain in 1850, his four-decade career with the Madras Army culminating in a promotion to lieutenant-general in 1887. His account conveys much of the uncertainty facing British forces during the advance through lower Burma. "All is doubt. Many are the speculations as to the future before us. We are completely isolated and learn nothing" (pp. 7-9). In 1857, he married Agnes Eliza Sullivan (1865-1913) in Madras. Her inscription is accompanied by a four-line poem, seemingly of her composition: "What gathering all together / of the Lov'd ones from before / the welcome and the greeting / before that better shore". Following her husband's death, she endowed a divinity prize in his honour in Madras. Octavo, pp. 28. Mounted carbon print portrait of author as frontispiece, printed caption, motto, and insignia below. Original reddish brown cloth, front board lettered in gilt with sword and medal devices in gilt. Cloth slightly rubbed, small notch to fore edges of boards, free endpapers browned, contents a little loose at stitching but holding: a very good copy.
