Edition originale en librairie de cette thèse novatrice et qui fut très remarquée. Cette monographie est très documentée avec de nombreuses références bibliographiques e…n bas de page. Gingeot explique qu'il fut associé, en tant qu'interne, aux prudentes expériences de Béhier sur l'emploi de l'alcool dans les affections fébriles de l'adulte et qu'il obtint de son nouveau chef, à l'hôpital des Enfants, l'autorisation d'appliquer ce traitement (eau-de-vie diluée) à ses jeunes patients. Dans une première partie, l'auteur retrace l'histoire de l'utilisation de l'alcool en médecine, insiste sur les travaux de Todd et rapporte 16 observations détaillées. Dans la seconde partie, Gingeot expose, d'après les travaux des physiologistes, les principaux phénomènes pouvant expliquer les effets observés. Paul Gingeot (1838-1899) deviendra médecin des hôpitaux de Paris et médecin personnel de Louis d'Orléans. Cf. Béhier, who, following the example of Todd in England, took the initiative in introducing the use of stimulants in the treatment of acute disease. With a courage which at first found few imitators, M. Béhier threw aside prejudice, and gave alcohol a cautious but fair trial in acute inflammations, especially pneumonia, and reported very favorably of the results of his experiments. M. Gingeot's book, though singularly modest and unostentatious in style, is filled with important matter, and a considerable portion of the volume is occupied with a number of accurately recorded cases." ; H.W.
