L'une des plus sombres pages de l'histoire de France. La milice française se voulait une chevalerie porteuse…de force et de renouveau. Elle devint une phalange maudite. Souvent évoquée, mais peu étudiée, mal connue, la milice a fini par être considérée comme une sorte de Gestapo française au service de l'ennemi, comme un ramassis de pillards et d'assassins. La milice, plus complexe qu'il n'y paraît, est un témoignage extrême des ravages qu'ont pu exercer sur des hommes d'action, patriotes mais bardés d'oeillères, d'abord un " maréchalisme " exacerbé et la phobie de la République, ensuite un anticommunisme obsessionnel et enfin les prédications des ultra-collaborationnistes. Pierre Giolitto explique le fatal engrenage qui, à partir de la débonnaire légion via le Service d'ordre légionnaire (Sol), a conduit en janvier 1943 à la naissance de la milice, sous l'impulsion de Joseph Darnand, héros légendaire de 14-18 et de 39-40, son fondateur, son patron et son âme qui trouvait Vichy trop faible et trop composite. Elle se lança avec conviction, et bientôt avec une violence aiguisée par les attentats dont ses membres étaient victimes, alors qu'elle n'était pas armée (elle ne le sera qu'à partir de novembre 1943), dans la lutte contre tous ceux qui, à ses yeux, étaient des suppôts de la démocratie et des alliés objectifs du bolchévisme : les maquisards et les " Judéo-Saxons ". Enfermés dans la certitude que la défaite de l'Allemagne déboucherait sur une France communiste dans une Europe dominée par Moscou, la milice devint inéluctablement l'alliée de l'occupant. Ses effectifs étaient restreints (guère plus de 8000 hommes armés), mais, privilégiés par la nomination de son chef, en décembre 1943, comme secrétaire général du Maintien de l'ordre (on parla d' " Etat milicien "), elle écrira en sept mois de 1944 les pages noires qui lui vaudront et lui valent encore de se voir attribuer tous les crimes, y compris ceux des autres. Enfermés dans un sombre isolement, soldats-policiers d'une cause perdue, les miliciens allèrent jusqu'au bout de leur dévoiement. Docteur es lettres, chef du Service d'Information du Ministère de l'Education Nationale, Pierre Giolitto est actuellement inspecteur général honoraire du Ministère de l'Education Nationale. Historien et pédagogue, il a publié de nombreux ouvrages relatifs notamment à l'histoire de l'enseignement et, chez Perrin : Histoire de la jeunesse sous Vichy (1991), Volontaires français sous l'uniforme allemand et Histoire de la Milice (1997).
