Nuova Serie). «L'immagine migliore per descrivere il silenzio di Pio XII sembra quella di un mosaico di silenzi, una figura i cui contorni appaiono frammentati e deformati se guardata troppo da vicino, mentre assume la sua forma complessiva solo se os…servata a distanza.» Durante la Seconda guerra mondiale Pio XII si espresse solo una volta in pubblico usando il concetto di «sterminio» per alludere alla sorte degli ebrei, nel 1943, quando parlò di «costrizioni sterminatrici». Eppure è certo che fosse al corrente delle atrocità naziste: con il recupero e il riordino dell'archivio personale di papa Pacelli, Giovanni Coco ha fatto emergere infatti le tracce di quella che doveva essere una lunga e ricca corrispondenza con il gesuita tedesco Lothar König, convinto antinazista, che aveva aderito alla Resistenza contro il regime. Nelle sue lettere a padre Robert Leiber, segretario personale del papa, König faceva un chiaro riferimento ad Auschwitz. Ma i «silenzi» di Pio XII erano cominciati già nei primi giorni della guerra: il 2 settembre 1939, il papa aveva espresso all'ambasciatore polacco «tutta la sua simpatia» per la «cattolica» Polonia invasa, però alle richieste del diplomatico di rendere pubbliche quelle parole sulla stampa internazionale, fu risposto che il pontefice preferiva un comunicato sull'«Osservatore Romano». Sarebbe stata questa la linea seguita dal pontificato di Pio XII: nella lunga tradizione vaticana il «principio del silenzio» era uno strumento ben consolidato nelle mani della diplomazia pontificia per preservare la «perfetta imparzialità» della Santa Sede. E il timore che una parola del papa sui crimini nazisti provocasse ritorsioni sui cattolici tedeschi condizionò in maniera decisiva le scelte del Vaticano. È innegabile, però, che nei riguardi del popolo ebraico si manifestò un atteggiamento più refrattario, una resistenza che, come scrive l'autore, «può essere compresa solo se analizzata all'interno delle secolari, complesse e difficilissime relazioni tra mondo ebraico e Chiesa cattolica». Come in un dietro le quinte, Giovanni Coco, archivista e ricercatore all'Archivio Apostolico Vaticano, ricostruisce questo mosaico attraverso le lettere personali e alla Segreteria di Stato della Santa Sede, i documenti diplomatici, le minute dei discorsi del pontefice, più volte corrette e ricorrette dalla mano dello stesso Pio XII, e gli articoli apparsi sull'«Osservatore Romano», nel tentativo di mettere in luce le ragioni per non intervenire, di volta in volta motivate dagli eventi in corso e da una prudente scelta diplomatica, mentre sullo sfondo emerge il timido inizio della lenta ma progressiva evoluzione della Chiesa riguardo alla questione ebraica.
