Cesare Giris l'umorista più famoso di Francia nel 1915 realizza 17 tavole campite di rossi roventi, di neri cupissimi, di atmosfere invereconde dure micidiali come le forche e taglienti come le baionette che affiorano ovunque tra volti tragici o impietosi in un'orgia devastante di lacerazione e di morte. Esse rappresentano in assoluto la sua opera più importante e decisiva collocandosi peraltro come il primo articolato esempio di intervento antimilitarista nell'arte del Novecento.
