L'ouvrage s'ouvre sur un frontispice photographique (Vue de LA0-KAY, sur la rive gauche du Fleuve Rouge et comprend 300 pages (dont de nombreuses planches photographiques) suivies par une carte en noir et une Table des matières. Sur la page titre, l'auteur se présente ainsi "par L. GIROD , Missionnaire apostolique" et dédie son livre "Aux Missionnaires et Soldats du TONKIN". Ce missionnaire est envoyé en août 1886 dans le district nord du TONKIN. La carte en fin, dressée par le P. Ravier, Missionnaire du Tonkin occidental en 1896 situe précisément cette zone , appelée aussi la "Suisse tonkinoise", avec ses hautes montagnes telles que le Ba-Vi et le Tam-Da). Précisons que le mot TONKIN désignait la partie nord du Vietnam actuel ( entre la Chine au nord, le Laos à l'ouest, l'ancien ANNAM au sud et le golfe du Tonkin à l'est, soit un quadrilatère d'environ 700 km sur 700 km). Ces dix années, on le lira, ne vont pas se dérouler dans la tranquillité des vraies montagnes hélvétiques. La table des matières, avec ses 32 chapitres, relate une décennie pleine de difficultés, de résistance et d'opérations militaire, car cette région est loin d'être pacifiée.
