Paris, 15 October, no year given. Giulia Grisi (181169), Italian operatic soprano. She toured the United States in 1854 with Giuseppe Mario, whom she married in 1856. Roles were written for her by Bellini, in I Puritani, and by Donizetti, in Don Pasquale.

Charming note asking the ticket office of an unspecified opera house to extend two tickets for that evening's performance to the violinist and conductor Romeo Accursi: "Ayez, je vous prie la bonté de remettre au porteur du présent billet, deux places de pit, ou stalles d'enfithéâtre [!] pour ce soir, c'est un ami à M.r… Mario et à moi, M.r Accursi - Mille compliments". - Romeo Accursi (1836-1919) met the famous Giulia Grisi early into his career. On 21 April 1858, he played a concert alongside Grisi and Enrico Tamberlik at Salle Herz in Paris. The young Accursi was one of Gioacchino Rossini's favourite performers. - Traces of former mounting. Somewhat stained.

To Charles de Beauregard, editor of "La Gazette de France", concerning a conflict with Auguste Vatel, director of the "Théâtre-Italien" in Paris, who tried to force her to sing "Elisetta" in the opera "Il matrimonio segreto": "Monsieur Vatel, directeur du Theatre Royal Italien, persiste à mettre mon nom s…ur ses affisches comme devant remplir le rôle de Elisetta dans l'opera Il Matrimonio Segreto. N'étant pas obligée aux termes de mes arrangements de remplir un second rôle, et celui de Elisetta se trouvant dans ce cas, j'ai à plusieurs reprises averti amicablement Mr. le directeur, que je ne pourrais pas l'accepter [.]". Grisi has taken legal actions against Vatel, who has refused to remove her name from the posters: "Vu son obstination, je l'ai fait sommer par ministère de l'huissier de faire disparaître mon nom [.] pour que le public, ne fut plus longtemps induit en erreur [.]". - Giulia Grisi is widely considered one of the leading sopranos of the 19th century. - Somewhat creased.

Lewis war Kupferstecher von Queen Victoria und erhielt für seine außerordentlichen Fähigkeiten als Kupferstecher wiederholt Sonderzuwendungen des englischen Könighauses. - Thieme/Becker 24, 162; Nagler 8, 490 (ungenau): "Seine Werke sichern ihm einen hohen Rang in der Geschichte der englischen Chalkographie". - Die Dargestellte Giulia Grisi war eine der bedeutendsten italienischen Opernsängerinnen des 19. Jahrhunderts. Sie debütierte 1828 als "Emma" in Rossini Zelmira. Von Rossini, Bellini u.a. hoch geschätzt, wurden mehrere Opern eigens für ihre Stimme geschrieben. In ihrer ersten Ehe lebte sie teils in London. - / A rare masterpiece of stipple engraving by Frederick Christian Lewis (1779-1856), engraver of Queen Victoria. In a technical brilliant and as artist in a fine and elegant way this portrait shows high perfection and fine atmosphere. Giulia Grisi was one of the most important Italian Opera singers (in Rossini, Donizetti, Bellini). - Margins a bit trimmed but still with ca. 40 mm white margins to the image.
