Spine, lettered in gilt, has a 2cm long split to top left edge with 5mm loss and a 1cm split to top right edge with 2mm loss; 5mm closed tear to center of base. Fore-edges clean and square. Internally foxing to rear of ffep and just a trace to the title page. Inscribed on the dedication page thus: '(indecipherable name) with the best regards of the editor Joseph Allen Mar 12 1855'. In 1800, he enrolled at the St Petersburg Naval College. Three years later, he was sent to England and sailed for five years on ships of the British fleet, where he probably met the author.
