Two hundred years after his birth on 12 November 1780 on a farm near the present-day Wellington Piet Retief remains a controversial figure in South African history. Many regard him as the founder of the Afrikaner nation and the first great Afrikaner. From time to time othe…rs have, however, cast doubts on his claim to this honour by highlighting the faults and misjudgements that are a feature of both his private and his public career. In this new and well-researched book the authors follow the course of Retief's life from his formative years in the Western Cape, through the turbulence and strife on the Eastern frontier in the 1820's and 1830's and during the long journey to the "promised land" as the elected leader of the Voortrekkers. The book deals extensively with Retief's varied activities in the Eastern Cape as trader, builder, farmer and field-commandant, his efforts to establish unity among the trekkers and the circumstances surrounding his death in Dingane's kraal - an event that has still not been explained satisfactorily in all its details. In the course of their research the authors have visited all the places linked with the Retief story and have tried to determine the exact route of Retief's journey from Stellenbosch to the Eastern Cape in 1812 and his trek route to the north in 1837-1838. This well-written and gripping book is therefore also a guide to the "Retief trail" from the western border of South Africa to its easternmost parts.
