Published by G. Bell & Sons, London, 1921
Seller: Brothertown Books, Deansboro, NY, U.S.A.
Soft cover. Condition: Good. 4th Edition. Here is "The Cathedral Church of Salisbury : A Description of its Fabric and a Brief History of the See of Sarum" is a book by Gleeson Smith that was published in 1921 by G. Bell & Sons in their "Cathedral Series". This lovely book (albeit somewhat worn in condition) has 50 illustrations, both halftone photographs and line drawings, which include a frontispiece, a title page vignette, and a floor plan of the cathedral. Smith's text is engaging and authoritative. The section which recounts the history of the See of Sarum is very interesting. Of course, any great cathedral of such age is literally drenched in history, so that even in discussing the various attractions of the building and its contents becomes a lesson of sorts in history. The architectural details are rich indeed. The approximately 4 "7/8 x 7 1/4" binding of decorated red paper is elaborately embellished with a complex Celtic design. Inside and out this is a handsome book that has seen considerable use. Richness of contents warrants a more lenient approach to the book's condition (see below). SERIES : Bell's Cathedral Series TITLE : The Cathedral Church of Salisbury : A Description of its Fabric and a Brief History of the See of Sarum [On cover : "Salisbury Cathedral"] AUTHOR : Gleeson Smith IMPRINT : G. Bell & Sons PLACE : London DATE : 1921 EDITION : Fourth Edition, so stated. STATUS : Out of Print - OP. The publisher is no longer in business. DETAILS : Series paperback, published for the trade; Contains 50 illustrations : halftone photographs and line drawings, including frontispiece and floor plans. Contains the author's brief Preface ; has a brief Index. [vi] + 123 pages. approximately 4 7/8" x 7 1/4", decorated red paper wraps is elaborately embellished with a complex Celtic design and lettering in black on front . Back cover is blank. On spine : "Salisbury" The Cathedral's ecclesiastical device in black on title page. CONDITION -- GOOD ONLY -- This is a previously owned book which remains clean and serviceable, if somewhat worn , with the following imperfections and particulars noted : EXTERIOR : Loss of paper to spine extremities; splitting to paper over joints; surface rub is moderate; spine is considerably worn, but title is still legible. Design and lettering on front is strong; corner tips are softly bumped. General fading to surface. BINDING : The book has obviously been read and is hardly as tight as when issued, thus the leaves opening widely and with the text-block sitting a bit laxly in the cover, being somewhat shaken, with the hinges being cracked a bit (binding thread, etc exposed) - however no leaves are detached or explicitly loose. INTERIOR : The interior, which has a few small and basically near-negligible smudges & spots, is clean and presentable with no writing and no marking Some of the halftone illustrations are a bit faded or worn from publishing use.
