Condition: very good. New Haven : Yale University Press, 1990. Hardcover. Dustjacket. 352 pp.Affects, or feelings, are crucial motivators and organizers in our psychological lives. Yet affect and the full range of emotional expressions have been relatively neglected by psychoanalysis since Freud's earliest formulations. This volume, the first in a three-part series addressing the centrality of affect, focuses on pleasure, which Freud believed to be a fundamental quality of affect. Here, psychoanalysts and psychiatrists integrate new understandings from the neurosciences, clinical research and practice, and observational studies of the development of infants and nonhuman mammals, and scholars in the humanities report on the philosophic and aesthetic implications. The Role of Affect in Motivation, Develo (Book 1)English text. Add to basketPaperback. Condition: new. Paperback. This biographical novel portrays the development and career of neuroscientist Marty Dennis. After tracing some family history, the story focuses on Marty's progression through graduate school, postdoctoral training, being junior faculty, senior faculty, and finally department chairperson. Along the way, the story reveals a number of twists and turns, including finding the love of his life, enduring a long episode of chronic fatigue syndrome (before it was so named), discovering the subjective realities of the NIH grant review process, and adapting to the demands and vicissitudes of academic life. Although the story is fictional, it is largely based on the author's personal experience. Indeed, a fair amount of real neuroscience is explained, albeit in story book fashion. The formula (N= 1) described by the title gradually becomes a theme in several places, referring to the fact that people often draw premature conclusions from too few numbers (N) of experimental subjects, with N=1 being the extreme example. The human fallacy of this tendency appears in full force at the end, with the final plot being surprising as well as reassuring. N Equals One is both entertaining and informative. The life experiences described, sometimes comical and other times serious, could well be real, as they closely resemble real events. Descriptions of the scientific process, of academic life, and of science itself are all in fact true. The reader acquires an intimate understanding of how scientists behave and function. In perhaps different ways, N Equals One will be interesting, and sometimes fascinating, to both scientists and non-scientists. This item is printed on demand. Add to basketPaperback. Condition: new. Paperback. This biographical novel portrays the professional and personal lives of neuroscientists David Joule and Marie Wilson. The narrative traces the development of their relationship and the achievement of their scientific goals. Everything happens within the context of a "feel good" love story. Along the way, there are real life descriptions of how science is conducted, a strong case is made for understanding why drug addiction is a chronic brain disease, and the mechanism underlying the discovery of a novel treatment for addictive disorders is explained. Although the story is fictional, much of the science is true, particularly as it pertains to addiction. The storyline embodies the message that people suffering from addiction need to be treated and need to be treated well, without the stigma and shame that is still prevalent today. Next to Last Chapter is both entertaining and informative. Much of the information is based on the author's personal experience in neuroscience and addiction medicine. Some of the life experiences described resemble real events. Descriptions of the scientific process and of academic life are mostly true. Many will find the love story endearing if not too good to be true. Perhaps in different ways, Next to Last Chapter will be interesting and enjoyable to both scientists and non-scientists.
