A tiny De Graza monkey born in the Los Angeles Zoo, after being rejected by its mother at birth, is lovingly cared for and learns to accept the friendship of humans . . . and eventually the affection of another monkey. Laura Glusha is a gifted artist whose work in this charming, warm-hearted volume has the quality of delicate Chinese brushwork. Sister Mary Dorothy Stirling, a member of the Franciscan Brothers and Sisters of Penance, is vitally concerned that the "protection of endangered species be undertaken, [so] the interrelationship of man with all forms of nature can be studied." EXCEPTIONAL CONDITION internally & externally with an ORIGINAL DETAILED SKETCH on the front pastedown of the adorable monkey holding a carrot. First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good +. Laura Glusha (illustrator). First edition. SIGNED. Unpaginated. Quarto [28.5cm]. Bound in a brown leatherette, with title stamped in gilt on spine. Small gilt stamped illustration of the eponymous monkey on the front board. Illustrated endpapers. Foot of spine gently bumped. Touch of soiling to fore-edge of textblock. In a mildly toned dust jacket, with light chipping to edges. The author has penned an inscription and an original illustration of Suck-a-toe on the verso of the half-title.There is also a large, laid-in photograph of Suck-a-toe with a second inscription - this one written from the perspective of the little monkey himself. Suck-a-toe (AKA Harold De Brazza), was born in the Los Angeles Zoo. Sadly, he was rejected by his mother at birth, necessitating substitute relationships with human caregivers. This is the charming story of his journey to "normal monkeyhood," and finding a companion of his own species. Lovely Chinese watercolor illustrations by the author.
