Erste Ausgabe; selten! - Eberhard Gmelin (1751 Tübingen - 1809 Heilbronn), Amtsphysikus aus Heilbronn und Spross der berühmten Tübinger Gelehrtenfamilie, war einer der angesehensten und besonnensten deutschen Mesmeristen, der eine große praktische Erfahrung hatte und sich von kritiklosen Entgleisungen und Übertreibungen ziemlich frei hielt. Ursprünglich hatte er alles "für Betrügerei, Windbeutelei und Alfanzerei" gehalten, "bis ihn im Jahre 1787 ein eigener Erfolg bei einem hartnäckigen Nervenleiden betroffen machte, so daß er sich bei Böckmann und Puységur persönlich nähere Auskunft holte" (Tischner/Bittel, Mesmer und sein Problem, S. 124, 258 f.). - Jean Pauls "Ätherlehre" basiert wesentlich auf Gmelins Forschungen. Schiller reiste 1793 nach Heilbronn, um von Gmelin Auskunft über die magnetische Kur zu erhalten, und der 11jährige Justinus Kerner wurde durch Gmelin erfolgreich von einem nervösen Leiden geheilt (vgl. Ellenberger, p. 127). - Im Mai 1789 begab sich Gmelin nach Karlsruhe, um seine Erfahrungen mit denen des Geheimen Hofrats Johann Lorenz Böckmann (1746-1802) abzugleichen, anschließend besuchte er die magnetopathische Heilanstalt des Straßburger Arztes Armand Marie Jacques de Chastenet, Marquis de Puységur. - Gmelin wirkte zeitlebens als Arzt in Heilbronn, nachdem er ehrenvolle Berufungen u. a. an die Universität Tübingen abgelehnt hatte. - Einband etw. fleckig und berieb., auf dem Rückdeckel einige Tintenflecke, ohne den vorderen fliegenden Vorsatz; Innendeckel mit kl. Christian Friedrich Jaeger (1739-1808) - "Jaeger, eine württembergische Aerzte- und Naturforscherfamilie in mehreren Generationen. - Christian Friedrich Jaeger, als Sohn eines Arztes am 13. October 1739 in Stuttgart geboren, studirte Anfangs Theologie, widmete sich aber später dem Studium der Medicin in Tübingen, ging 1764 nach Leyden und kehrte, nachdem er eine wissenschaftliche Reise durch Holland und einen Theil Deutschlands gemacht hatte, nach Tübingen zurück, wo er 1767 mit der "Bus. de antagonismo musculorum" zum Dr. med. promovirt wurde. Einige Zeit später erhielt er den durch DAVID MAUCHART'S Tod erledigten Lehrstuhl für Pathologie und klinische Medicin mit dem Titel eines herzoglichen Leibarztes. 1768, nach PH. FR. GMELIN'S Tode, wurde er dessen Nachfolger als Professor der Botanik und Chemie und las später noch zahlreiche medicinische Collegia. 1780 wurde er vom Herzog Karl Eugen zum Leibmedicus und 1785 zum Professor der Karls-Akademie ernannt, wo er Staatsarzneikunde und gerichtliche Medicin vortrug. Als Leibarzt erfreute er sich des Vertrauens von vier Regenten Württembergs und starb als königlicher Leibmedicus 1808. Jaeger hat eine ganze Anzahl Schriften hinterlassen; doch bestehen diese meist nur aus Dissertationen und akademischen Programmen von geringerer wissenschaftlicher Bedeutung. Die bedeutendste ist die von der Lungenprobe handelnde, wie überhaupt mit ihm erst die Periode der gerichtlichen Medicin und Öffentlichen Gesundheitspflege in Württemberg begann. Die genannte Schrift ist betitelt: "Disquisitio medico-forensis, qua casus et annotationes ad vitam foetus neogeni dijudicandam facientes proponuntur" (Ulm 1780). Von den auderen sind zu citiren: "Diss. sistens observationes de foetibus recens natis, jam in utero mortuis putridis, cum subjuncta epicrisiu (Tübingen 1767) - "Diss. sistens experimenta de submersis cum subjuncto examine phaenomenorum in iis observatorum" (Ibid. 1769) - "Progr. an in summo cuneationis capitis gradu praeferenda sit metkodus Sigaultiana, hactenus usitatae capitis perforationi vel et scctioni Caesareaeu (Ibid. 1779) - "Examen rationum sectionem ossium pubis oppugnantium vel limitanlium" (Ibid. 1780) - "Medicinische Anweisung wegen der tollen Hundswuth, nebst einer Vorschrift für die Dorf barbierer (Stuttgart 1782) - "Ueber die Natur und Behandlung der krankhaften Schwäche des menschlichen Organismus u.s.w" (Ibid. 1807).
