Der Band versammelt und dokumentiert die Inhalte akademischer Lehrveranstaltungen zur Ethik, die der Ar…tes-Professor Rudolph Goclenius an der Marburger Universität gegen Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts geleitet hat. In Form von 33 mehr oder weniger ausführlichen Disputationen und einer Hundertschaft kurzgefasster Quaestionen wird vor allem auf der Basis zweier klassischer Texte der Antike, der Nikomachischen Ethik des Aristoteles und Ciceros "Vom pflichtgemäßen Handeln", aber von da aus auch eingreifend in aktuelle sittlich-politische Fragen der damaligen Zeit, eine Fülle ethischer Themen und Aspekte bearbeitet. In der Summe ergibt sich ein weithin übersichtliches Panorama der traditionellen Themen humanistischer Ethik-Reflexionen. In der Einleitung hat der Übersetzer zweierlei unternommen, erstens im scheinbaren Allerlei der Vielfalt der Texte und der Vielheit der Ansätze soweit wie möglich vereinigende Strukturen aufzufinden, zweitens einen Brückenschlag von den vormaligen Fragestellungen zum zeitgenössischen sittlichen Bewusstsein zu versuchen. Der Übersetzung liegt ein Erstdruck aus der Bibliothek des Waldeckischen Geschichtsvereins in Bad Arolsen zugrunde (Inv.-Nr. 211), der um ein ebenfalls dort aufbewahrtes Exemplar der fehlerbereinigten vierten Auflage (Marburg 1601, Inv.-Nr. 295) ergänzt wird. Während vom Übersetzer zwar kein detaillierter Vergleich der beiden Auflagen vorgenommen wird, so wird im ausführlichen Anmerkungsapparat doch an vielen Stellen auf Unterschiede, Besonderheiten und Klärungsbedürftiges eingegangen. Ein Namenregister der von Goclenius in den Lehrveranstaltungen behandelten Autoren beschließt den Band. 389 Seiten, broschiert (Königshausen & Neumann 2010). Statt EUR 86,00. Zugrundegelegt war dem Übersetzen anfangs ein Exemplar des Erstdrucks der EE (1592), vorhanden in der Bibliothek des Waldeckischen Geschichtsvereins in Bad Arolsen unter Inv.Nr. 211. Die Texterschließungsphase war fast beendet, da fiel dem Bearbeiter ein bis dahin nicht weiter eingesehener anderer Band aus dem gleichen Bestände (Inv.Nr. 295) auf, zusammengebunden, erstens, aus den Vier Teilen Metaphysices generalis des Nicolaus Taurellus, erschienen zu Marburg/L 1604, und zweitens aus der 4. Auflage der EE, Marburg 1601, jetzt unter dem Titel: Rodolphi Goclenii professoris logici in Academia Marpurgensis Exercitationes et Disquisitiones Ethicae et Politicae . Quarta editio auctwr et casti-gatior. Etc. Der Leiterin der Bibliothek sei tief empfundener Dank ausgesprochen für die Auszeichnung und das Vertrauen, das sie in den Bearbeiter gesetzt hat, ihm den einen und den anderen Band auf lange Zeit für sein Unternehmen in die Hand zu geben. Das Urteil über die kompositorischen Inkonzinnitäten und anderen Schwachpunte der Vorlage war längst gebildet. Da erwies es sich als von hohem Reiz, die fehlerbereinigte (castigatior) Version zum Vergleich heranzuziehen mit der Fragestellung, ob deren Hersteller es vielleicht ähnlich angesehen und entsprechend eingegriffen hätten. Daß es in der Tat in den allermeisten Fällen so war, hat dem Interpreten für seine Arbeit viel Bestätigung und neue Motivation zum Weitermachen an dem großen Projekt verschafft. Der Vergleich ist übrigens nicht komplett durchgeführt - das wäre eine ganz andere Aufgabe gewesen; dort, wo Klärungsbedarf bestand, ist der Abgleich erfolgt, dabei wurde allerdings auch dies und das entdeckt, wonach ursprünglich nicht gesucht war. Die Einzelheiten dazu sind in der Einleitung und in den Anmerkungen zum Text suo loco vorgetragen. Da der Index contentorum von der tatsächlichen Reihenfolge der Texteinheiten so sehr abweicht, ist für diese Ausgabe ein Verzeichnis der Texte, wie sie vorliegen, angelegt und dem Übersetzungsteil vorangestellt worden. Die da gegebenen Titel sind aber allermeist nur Abbreviaturen und je immer aus dem Bestand zu vervollständigen. Aufgabe dieses Verzeichnisses ist es nur, dem Leser eine Übersicht über die Themenvielfalt und die Buntheit ihrer gegebenen Anordnung zu liefern.
