London 1652, Henrici Siele. A single sheet copper etched map overall sheet size: ca. 47.5 x 35 cm., map size: ca 43.5 x 34 cm., 4 old fold lines, now folded in half, original decle edges on all sides, as issued, clean, solid image. R A R E This famous map of all Asia was executed by the celebrated engraver & cartographer, Johan Goddard [flourished 1645-71]. The map was then used in the most famous and stunning cartographic series, the "COSMOGRAPHIE" published in London, 1663. It was compiled by Dr.Peter Heylyn [1600-1662]. This series of superb atlases with maps of the whole world was the most grand scale and complete cartographic atlases of the entire world in the 17th century. A landmark and major contribution to world cartography. * The ASIAE map shows a very large geographical view of all classical Asia, from Mare Tartaricum at the extreme North to Adu Island just south of the Maldivias; from the extreme Eastern tip of Candia at the far West. just above Maris Mediterranei Paris which also shows Constanhip Polis [ancient Constantinoble] all the way East to Idos Matelotes and Duinas Colunas islands, just past the Philippines and Southeast of Japan. The map then shows fully all of Japan, its related islands, Formosa, Ryukyu [wrongly placed just below Formosa], all of the Philippines, Indonesia, Streto de Sunda and that area near Sumatra, Malayan peninsula before Singapore as listed, all of Indo-China [Cambodia, Laos & old Vietnam] again preceding the French era by 200 years, Siam, Burma and all of S.E. Asia, all of China, Tibet, Mongolia, Tartaria, the Great Wall, Corea, Central and S. Asia, Persia, Farsia, Cabil [sic], Arabian peninsula: Ayaman, Arabia Felix, Northeastern edge of Africa, all of the Holy Lands, Western & Eastern Europe, Russian, Crimea and the Steppe et al. * The map is remarkable in its great named and details of river confluences, cities, both small and large, names of mountains, lakes, and geographical features indicated such as mountains, lakes, rivers, larger cities and oceans named. For a person of the mid-17th century, this map gave a rather accurate [to the time] insight to the Asian world and its outstanding features. * While there is the usual cartographic distortion found in maps of this period, by and large it is a fairly close impression of what was where and the names are still mostly correct, as well as the 'geographic' look of the countries illustrated. That is to say this is not miles off from what is now. * COSMOGRAPHIE 1663: A rare and remarkably detailed map of the Asian continent by Johan Goddard, with the imprint of Anna Seile, Henry's widow, one of the few women to be involved in London's map publishing business. * BIBLIOGRAPHY: R.V. Tooley: TOOLEY'S DICTIONARY OF MAPMAKERES, p.249. *.
