Pièces justificatives relatives aux Adaption par les particuliers". This study refers to the system of adoption and care for legitimate orphans in the city of Lyon, France, between 1536 and 1793. During this period, Lyon, a major economic and cultural center, developed charitable institutions to care for orphans, especially those born to married parents (i.e., "legitimate" orphans). This system was part of broader social welfare efforts led by religious groups, municipal authorities, and wealthy benefactors. In 1536, institutions and religious organizations, such as the Aumône générale and local hospitals, began to take in orphans, ensuring they were housed, educated, and trained for future employment. The Catholic Church played a crucial role, with convents and brotherhoods providing shelter and moral guidance. Wealthy merchants and local authorities supported orphanages financially, seeing it as both a moral duty and a means of social stability. Orphans were often placed in apprenticeships with craftsmen, merchants, or farmers to ensure they could support themselves as adults. Girls were sometimes placed in convents or trained in domestic work. The French Revolution (1789-1799) led to the dissolution of many religious institutions and the restructuring of social welfare. In 1793, during the Reign of Terror, many orphanages were closed, and care for orphans was reorganized under the new republican government. Historical Significance: This system reflects early social welfare practices in France before the modern concept of state-sponsored child protection. It highlights the intersection of charity, religion, and municipal governance in pre-revolutionary France. Condition : very good copy. Keywords : , adoption *2006-100 rechtsgeschiedenis.
