Geboren in Frankfurt, ging Adam Elsheimer schon früh nach Rom, das nicht nur Kapitale der Antike war, sondern auch Zentrum der aktuellen Kunst, wo der neue barocke Stil gerade Formen annahm - und Elsheimer war daran nicht ganz unbeteiligt. Seine große Meisterschaft der Lichtführung, seine atmosphärisch dichten Nachtstücke und sein Gespür für subtile Poesie machen die nur etwa vierzig auf uns gekommenen Gemälde aus. Ebenso wie eine noch geringere Anzahl von Zeichnungen sind sie durch ein besonders kleines, intimes Format gekennzeichnet. Spätestens ab 1600 war er in Rom, schon 1610 starb er, doch die großen Meister des 17. Jahrhunderts, Rubens, Rembrandt und viele französische und flämische Maler waren tief von seiner malerischen Auffassung beeinflusst.
