rigide. Condition: Assez bon. Second edition; 12mo, six volumes bound on three physical volumes; 212, 209, 209, 212, 210, 225pp. Bound in full eighteenth century speckled calf (lightly worn with minor loss to extremities), gilt rolls to board edges, spines divided by gilt rolls into five compartments with gilt lettered spine labels to second compartments and gilt motifs to remaining compartments, sporadic unobtrusive spots and stains but overall a clean attractive example wiith engraved frontispiece to each volume, two further engravings to vol.1, enciphered preface to v.1, blank framed page (v.3, pp.203-204), fragmentary page (v.5, p.57) and closing table of contents (confirming that the work does indeed commence at chapter 37). A very good copy of Gorgy's allegory of the early years of the French revolution, using Sterne's Shandy as inspiration for a fragmented narrative dealing amongst much else with themes of liberty, government, monarchy and the legitimacy (or otherwise) of insurrection and popular violence. Like Sterne's original, a strikingly modern fiction with some apposite messages for our own times. Attractive original example of this scarce title.
