Lars Johan Govenius (1828-99) var författare av en mängd småhistorier men är nog mest känd för sitt deltagande som predikant på Fregatten Norrköpings resa i västindien år 1861-62, vilket han beskrivit i två böcker. The complete account, including the rare volume of lithographs illustrating travels of the Swedish frigate, Norrköping, to Swedish possessions in the West Indies and visits to North American cities. The Norrköping was sent to protect Swedish shipping during the American Civil War. The author was the ship minister on this cruise. The fine lithographic views illustrate the frigate at sea as well as an American steamship, and the first published view of Gustavia on St. Bart's, where the ship called on Sweden's only overseas colony. The author appears to have been much taken by the theatrical and musical atmosphere of Boston, and includes three plates illustrating dancers and singers with their minstrels. Govenius' detailed text issued a year before is also included here. "Excellent chapters on Boston and on American women and family life" - Larson. Not in Sabin. The NUC locates only two copies of the lithographic volume (Yale and New York State Library) and two copies of the text volume (Yale and Newberry Library), and Larson adds a copy of the text at the University of Texas. Swedish novelist Johan Oskar Laurentius Govenius' detailed account of his voyage to the United States and West Indies, including a list of the ship's officers, poetry, theatre programs, and songs. The quarto atlas appeared a year later. The Negro in the West Indies was of special interest to Govenius and is the subject of several plates. Govenius stayed in Boston with Swedish Americans; he enjoyed the Boston theatre and described its actresses.…
