Original dark blue boards with gilt lettering to spine. Book is an ex-library copy with library stamp present on front pastedown. FFEP has multiple names written from previous owners. Age related sunning and darkening to page block, and dust toning to top of page block. Minor spotting to page block. Bumping, wear and softening to spine ends and corners. Some loss of cloth to both spine ends. General age related wear to boards. Lean to spine. Some spotting and toning to endpapers. Pages mostly clean and unmarked. (Loose newsletter from 1892 inside book). Publisher's emblem stamped into back cover. Overall Good condition hardcover.

Bound by Orrock for John Wanamaker" in small print on verso of front free endpaper. Half-bound in blue leather with gray cloth-covered boards faded gilt top and bottom edges and gilt-stamped lettering and decorations on spine and crack at front endpaper. Spine has wear on lengthwise edges and head and tail. Mild tanning to pages throughout with occasional thumb marking and pencil annotations present with few pages having brittle ends. Boards have moderate shelf wear with rubbing and heavy corner bumping. Some light marking to surfaces. Previous owner inscription date Dec 1903. The women include Lady Russell, Lady Warwick, Lady Maynard, Mrs. Hutchinson and Mrs. Godolphin with their portraits (see images). "Johnstone provides biographical sketches of influential English women during the Restoration to show that English womanhood remained untarnished during those degenerate days." From the Saturday Review dated August 13, 1892, "Indeed, it may be questioned whether the term "leading is applicable to any of the good women here commemorated, but their influence was exerted rather check than to lead".
