Édition originale de cet ouvrage considérable et fondamental pour l?étude de la santé à Strasbourg au XIXe siècle. Avec une vue gravée de Strasbourg placée en frontispice (une des premières représentations connues de l'hôpital civil) et un grand plan dépliant topographique de la ville, relié in-fine. "Graffenauer étudia point par point l?ensemble des conditions de vie et de l?état sanitaire des Strasbourgeois. Après une étude purement topographique (minéralogie, hydrologie, climatologie, etc), Graffenauer se pencha sur le mode de vie de la population (profession, m?urs, alimentation, ?) puis étudia une à une les maladies qui frappent les Strasbourgeois. Il s?attacha à définir et à séparer les endémies, épidémies et maladies sporadiques qui se manifestent à Strasbourg, et publia des statistiques de mortalité se rapportant à chacune de ces affections. Enfin, il se livra à de nombreuses remarques et critiques pour améliorer le niveau sanitaire de la population. (?) Né à Strasbourg en 1775, Jean-Philippe Graffenauer, connu avant tout pour sa Topographie médicale de Strasbourg (1816), rejoint la Grande Armée en tant que médecin militaire en octobre 1805. Incorporé dans le 8ème Corps du Maréchal Mortier, il suit la Grande Armée et sillonne l?Allemagne et la Pologne jusqu?en 1808. C'est l'année suivante qu'il publie ces "Lettres écrites en Allemagne, en Prusse et en Pologne", dans lesquelles il retrace tout son périple. S?il consacre une large part de ses lettres à décrire les paysages et les cités des régions qu?il traverse, il s?y livre aussi à de nombreuses observations scientifiques, en particulier dans le domaine de la minéralogie, l?une de ses activités favorites. Il décrit avec précision les institutions médicales et les hôpitaux des villes où il séjourne, ainsi que les établissements où il est affecté. Petit manque de la taille d'une pièce de monnaie sur la page de titre, correspondant probablement au retrait d'un cachet de bibliothèque, retrait comblé anciennement par du papier vierge.
