Add to basketLeather bound. Condition: Near fine. First and Limited Edition. One of 20 deluxe copies, quarto size, 63 pp. Since 1972 The Whittington Press has been printing books by letterpress, from type, in the Gloucestershire village of Whittington. The Press has received numerous awards for its printing, and in 2008 The Center for Book Arts in New York held an exhibition of their work. Their books are highly sought-after by collectors of fine press work, and this work is a wonderful example of their unparalled excellence and high standards. Published to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of The Marlborough College Press, the book is structured as a series of essays by the above authors, which together provide the reader a glimpse into "the Press [as] seen as [the] six of us who remember" (n.b., from the Introduction). This one of 20 copies of the deluxe version, bound in full leather and with Whittington marbled endpapers (there were also 200 copies of the standard version). ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full blue goatskin over boards, the front board with a small gilt device of the Whittington Press inset into a debossed oval, gilt lettering on the spine, endpapers of Whittington marbled paper, title page in blue and black with the Press device, one of the tipped-in speciman pieces serving as frontispiece, four additional tipped-in specimens bound in throughout, in a pocket at the rear pastedown are two folded facsimile broadsides, the colophon with a small wood engraving by Edward Walters; binding quarto size (11 1/4" by 7 7/8"), pagination: [i-x] [1] 2-51 [1, blank] [1, colophon]; this volume no. XVIII of the twenty deluxe copies (total edition 220). Loosely laid in is a small piece of Press ephemera, a small sheet inviting interested parties to submit their contact information to receive catalogues; the volume is housed in a slipcase of sturdy cardboard with light blue paper over the sides, a darker blue cloth covering the top and bottom. ___CONDITION: Volume near fine, the leather smooth and supple, clean other than a few light spots, straight corners without rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, the two facsimile broadsides fine (in appearance they have never been opened), and entirely free of prior owner markings; the spine sunned and the blue on the front has faded a bit unevenly. The piece of ephemera fine, clean and without wear; the slipcase near fine, strong and sturdy, free of tears to the seams, clean other than a few very light spots, slightly sunned near the opening. Overall, a lovely example of the deluxe version of this work. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note the following: (i) additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs, please inquire for details; and (ii) any taxes, duty, or tariffs charged by your country will, of necessity, be your responsibility. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
