This book provides a detailed account of the life and career of John de Grandisson, the 17th Bishop of Exeter (1292-1369), during the tumultuous 14th century. Appointed by the Pope in 1327, the author reveals that Grandisson immediately faced financial hardship due to a large debt incurred by the diocese. Grandisson worked tirelessly to raise funds and, despite facing opposition from religious houses and the local Archdeacon, he was eventually successful. In addition to examining Grandisson's financial struggles and his work rebuilding the Cathedral Nave, the book delves into his role as a diplomat and his involvement in important political events of the time, including a peace negotiation between England and France. Through a detailed examination of his Register, the author presents a vivid portrait of Grandisson's work, offering a unique insight into the life and challenges faced by a medieval Bishop. The book will appeal to historians, scholars of medieval England, ecclesiastical history buffs, as well as anyone generally interested in the era. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
