sheet_music. Condition: Acceptable. Boston: Oliver Ditson Company [Published date: 1926]. Sheet music, 6 pp. In acceptable condition. Loose-leaf sheet music in decorated wraps. Edges of pages have several 1" or less nicks and tears. Spine of wraps is taped with old yellow tape that is starting to fall apart. Pages are yellowed w…ith age and music itself has a few light red and black pencil marks. NOT Ex-library. Overall a solid reading copy. The words to this song appear as "Bow Low, Mary" (with slight variation) in Thomas Wentworth Higginson's 1867 article for The Atlantic Monthly titled "Negro Spirituals." Higginson was a Union officer during the American Civil War and a fervent abolitionist. In 1867, he wrote the article for The Atlantic Monthly in which he documented the songs sung by the African American soldiers in the First South Carolina Volunteers, a regiment he commanded. Higginson's article is one of the earliest written accounts of Negro spirituals, and it played a significant role in bringing these songs to the attention of a broader audience. He desribed the song as "very graceful and lyrical, and with more variety of rhythm than usual." The lyrics are: Sail, O Sail, O brudder! Sail, O believer! Sail over yonder. Bow low, Mary, Bow low, Martha, For Jesus come an lock de door, And carry de keys away. Sail, O sail! sail, O brudder! Sail, O believer! Sail over yonder. Weep, O Mary! Bow low, Martha! For Jesus come and lock de dork And carry de keys away. Sail, O sail! Sail, O brudder, For Jesus come and lock de door And carry de keys away.
