It is an original 1902 illustrated dinner menu from the Lotos Club honoring Maurice Grau, heavily signed by some of…the most important figures in the history of the Metropolitan Opera. The stunning sepia-toned cover artwork features a central portrait of Grau surrounded by characters from famous operas, framed by theatrical masks and a lyre. Historical Significance & Signatures: This menu represents the absolute pinnacle of the "Golden Age of Opera" in New York. The signatures on this piece belong to the titans who built the Metropolitan Opera into a global powerhouse: Maurice Grau: The guest of honor. As the managing director of the Metropolitan Opera from 1898 to 1903, he brought the world's greatest singers to New York and established the Met as a dominant global force. Édouard de Reszke (Signed Ed de Reszke): A globally famous Polish operatic bass. He was one of the absolute biggest superstars of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, renowned for his immense vocal power and stage presence. Anton van Rooy (Signed M van Rooy): A legendary Dutch bass-baritone. He was arguably the most celebrated Wagnerian singer of his generation and a cornerstone of the Met's German repertoire. Andreas Dippel (Signed A. Dippel): A powerhouse German operatic tenor. He was a prolific performer under Grau and later went on to become the co-manager of the Metropolitan Opera itself.
