If you're familiar with Japan, you'll know a type of bar called a snack bar. They're found all over the country, in big cities and small towns alike. They typically consist of a counter and some stools, maybe a booth or two, usually run by a middle-aged woman, the mama, or less frequently, a man, the master. The clientele is generally made up of regulars. Unlike a regular bar, where a first-time customer simply walks in and sits down, the etiquette at a snack bar for a newcomer is to ask the mama for permission to enter. The entertainment, if you can call it that, aside from a simple drinks menu, consists of chatting with the mama, mingling with other customers, and karaoke. At the time of writing, they're considered the least trendy places in the country to have a drink.A few years ago, while traveling around Japan, I noticed that every city seemed to have a snack shop called "Sakura." Sakura, or cherry blossom, is such a common name for a business that it's perhaps a little unimaginative. Though somehow it seemed to fit with how unfashionable these places were. It really did seem like every city had one, and when I checked with the Japan Snack Owners Association, they confirmed that, in fact, among their members, Snack Sakura was the most common name. So I decided to try to visit and photograph as many as I could, all over the country, from Okinawa to Hokkaido. At first, I simply stumbled upon Snack Sakuras without looking for them. Once I decided to try and find them, things got quite complicated. Many of them don't have phone numbers or a website. In the case of those that do, when you arrive you discover they've changed their name, or the building has been demolished, or they closed down and never reopened. But little by little, I started to make progress. After six years of traveling the country, I've photographed snacks called "Sakura" in more than half of Japan's forty-seven prefectures. "Snack Sakura" presents this world of snacks that isn't exactly "hidden," but only becomes visible when you look at it from a certain angle.

Add to basketpaperback. Condition: Good. Lambot, Ian; Girard, Greg (illustrator). Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. First Edition, First Printing. "In October 2010 Vietnam's vibrant capitol Hanoi celebrated its millennium anniversary. To commemorate this momentous occasion, Greg Girard was invited to capture the spirit of daily life and the architectural heritage of this unique and complex city, taking us through the city's streets and alleys, onto its rooftops and balconies, and into the shops and homes of Hanoi's residents on the eve of the Millennium. Eschewing the city's better-known landmarks, Girard instead explores the usually overlooked features that define daily life for residents, taking us into a private and intimate version of the everyday." Magenta Foundation, 2010. Hardcover in pictorial boards. First Edition, First Printing. 123 pages with 76 color photographic images throughout. Phantom Shanghai by Greg Girard The Magenta Foundation HB 2007 First Edition ISBN 13: 9780973973914 ISBN 10: 0973973919 "Shanghai?a city in the process of dismantling its history to accommodate China's new cosmopolitan vision of itself."?Greg Girard. As Shanghai modernizes and seeks acceptance as an international city, buildings and neighborhoods that were once preserved simply by lack of intervention are now being purposefully demolished. Phantom Shanghai is a spectacular look at a Shanghai that won't survive the vision the country has for itself. Since the late '90s Girard has been photographing the city's buildings, shops, hutongs, homes, and neighborhoods, many of which have since disappeared. This stunning photographic journey is a look at present-day Shanghai. AS NEW, no defects, very clean, in AS NEW dust jacket now in protected in archival mylar.
