A partir del Decreto de Graciano (1140) se inicia la edad de oro del Derecho Canónico, y con ella se intensifica la actividad legislativa de los Papas que sigue fiel a la forma de litterae decretales que son coleccionadas en múltiples compilaciones de carácter privado. Entre la cantidad de compilaciones de Decretales entre 1140 y 1234, en las Universidades y Escuelas se generaliza el uso de cinco compilaciones que recibirán el nombre de "Quinque compilaciones antiquae", tres de las cuales habrán sido compuestas por encargo pontificio y revestidas de carácter oficial. Con ese mismo carácter oficial el papa Gregorio IX ordenará a San Raimundo de Peñafort la redacción de una nueva colección de Decretales de gran amplitud que, desplazando a todas las compilaciones anteriores, evite los inconvenientes de la multiplicidad de las compilaciones privadas; esta colección llamada Decretales de Gregorio IX, o Liber Extra, dividida en cinco libros y éstos en títulos y capítulos, será promulgada en 1234. 10 hojas, inclusive portada con orla y viñeta xilográfica del impresor, tipografia romana y cursiva, portada recto y verso a dos tintas, también la última hoja, al dorso gran grabado xilográfico que representa al Papa entregando las Decretales. 423 folios, en el centro texto gótico a dos tintas y rodeado de dos columnas para las glosas; letras capitales xilográficas de diversos tamaños; en el folio 325v, "Arbol consanguinitate", y en el 326, "Arbol afinitatis"; sigue, 1 hoja con texto en tipografía romana y a dos columnas que contiene la "Vita Gregorii noni Roman ipraesulis", escrita por san Ramon de Peñafort, sigue, 4 hojas de "Tabula Ludovici Bolognini de Bononia", sigue, 18 folios numerados en árabe, para "Margarita Decretalium, libellus admodum". Ejemplar con la portada, primeras hojas y última, reforzadas y remarginadas de antiguo, toda la obra afectada en la parte inferior por humedad antigua y mancha. Encuadernación moderna en pergamino con título rotulado en el lomo. 42x28 cm.
