El interés que en la actualidad siguen suscitando Gregorio y sus escritos, particularmente sus Historias, no resulta difícil de explicar. Ante todo constituye nuestra principal fuente de información, en ocasiones la única, sobre la Galia en el siglo VI. Es cierto que nuestro autor nunca pretendió llevar a cabo una historia del pueblo franco como tal, y que su testimonio puede calificarse de todo menos de imparcial u objetivo; ahora bien, no se puede soslayar que el Turonense fue testigo privilegiado, y a veces incluso protagonista, de buena parte de lo que narra, razón por la que su obra, con todas las cautelas que se quiera, resulta imprescindible a la hora de abordar el estudio de los reinos merovingios. Lo mismo se puede decir de muchas de las noticias que proporciona sobre Hispania, el norte de Italia o el Imperio bizantino. Restano famose le pagine che Auerbach dedicò a Gregorio di Tours in Mimesis, facendone il prosatore esemplare di un'epoca che aveva nel realismo immediato, cioè senza forti mediazioni intellettuali, la sua caratteristica stilistica. Poche idee astratte, nessuna strutturazione sintattica del mondo, ma in compenso immagini vive e tangibili, di grande forza espressiva. Tutto questo Auerbach lo diceva a proposito della Storia dei Franchi. Ma Gregorio di Tours, oltre che storico, fu un fecondissimo agiografo. I suoi otto libri di "Miracoli" rappresentano una delle testimonianze più importanti per lo studio di quello che viene considerato l'aspetto distintivo della religiosità del periodo post-romano: il culto dei santi e delle loro reliquie. Dei quattro libri dedicati a san Martino, patrono della città di Tours di cui Gregorio fu vescovo metropolitano, viene qui proposta la prima traduzione italiana accompagnata da un ampio commento. Il racconto dei miracoli di Martino si snoda in una narrazione realistico-simbolica che possiede molteplici motivi di interesse: in primis quello propriamente religioso, per il significato quasi liturgico delle ripetute sequenze miracolistiche, e per il carattere a un tempo fisico e spirituale proprio del santo presente ancora in questo mondo attraverso le sue reliquie; poi quello culturale, per il rapporto con la medicina popolare e con la tradizione medica greco-romana, ma anche per il significato attribuito alla malattia del corpo interpretata come segno dell'unica vera malattia: quella dell'anima; infine quello pastorale e politico, sia per quanto riguarda le modalità e i contenuti della predicazione svolta da Gregorio, sia per la connessione di quest'ultima con una visione interamente confessionale della società umana che il vescovo di Tours condivise con Gontrano, il sovrano della dinastia merovingia a cui fu maggiormente legato. Si tratta di motivi tra loro interconnessi, difficilmente scindibili l'uno dall'altro, rintracciabili nei resoconti di ogni singolo miracolo: resoconti strutturati all'interno di un protocollo che ha strettamente a che fare con l'organizzazione dei pellegrinaggi e la conservazione delle reliquie, e rimanda a un impasto complesso di spiritualità e agire politico. Quest'opera di Gregorio di Tours ci immerge in un mondo non sempre facile da comprendere, e in una religiosità affascinante anche perché così diversa da quella delle epoche precedenti e successive. Nessuna fede religiosa è più autentica e profonda di quella di Gregorio, che venera chi Ğfece splendere il sole e ornò il cielo di stelleğ, chi Ğriempì le acque di rettili e le terre di animaliğ: nel cielo appaiono raggi di un fulgore accecante, quasi che Dio si rivelasse agli uomini nella natura; i segni della Bibbia sono ancora presenti nel suolo, che porta le impronte dei carri egiziani che attraversarono il Mar Rosso; e ogni giorno assistiamo ai miracoli dei santi, che testimoniano come il mondo sia sacro. Ma cosa rivela, visto da vicino, questo mondo sacro? Le mani dei re dalle lunghe chiome sono rosse di sangue; i figli sgozzano i padri, i padri i figli, i fratelli i fratelli; delitti violano i monasteri; solo la passione di potere, di denaro e la passione erotica ispirano gli uomini. Mai la storia appare così feroce, sanguinaria, assurda: un guazzabuglio di deliri, casi e insensatezze, dove non si scopre nessun disegno e nessun filo di speranza.
