Einleitend zitiert der Autor, selber Angehöriger der kanadischen Opaskwayak Cree Nation, die UN-Resolution von 2007, die (entgegen jahrhundertelanger Zwangsassimilisierungen) ein Recht der First Nations auf ihr "Anderssein" festschreibt - und die gegen den Widerstand Kanadas, der USA, Australiens und Neuseelands verabschiedet wurde. Tatsächlich wurde in den vergangenen Jahrhunderten zwar viel ÜBER die indigenen Kulturen geschrieben - aber eben aus einer vorurteilsbehafteten, oft kolonialistisch geprägten und entwürdigenden Perspektive. Dagegen kamen die Angehörigen dieser Kulturen mit ihren eigenen Sichtweisen selbst kaum zu Wort. Bereits 1972 hielt die eurokanadische Schriftstellerin Margaret Atwood zutreffend fest: "Die Indianer und Eskimos wurden selten aus ihrer eigenen Perspektive und um ihretwillen betrachtet: Sie werden für gewöhnlich zu Projektionen von etwas in der weißen kanadischen Psyche gemacht" (was ebenso für die USA galt). Indianer und Eskimo - freilich sind auch bereits diese Begriffe Kennzeichen kolonialistischer Überheblichkeit. Gregory Younging zeigt in seinem übersichtlichen und mit Fallbeispielen illustrierten Styleguide, wie sich (neo-)kolonialistische Annahmen, Formulierungen und Abwertungen vermeiden lassen. Kurz und bündig zusammengefasst werden die Stilprinzipien in 22 Grundsätzen. Dabei vermittelt Younging jeweils überzeugende, konkrete Alternativvorschläge für eine angemessenere Schreibweise. Und apropos konkret: zum authentischen, respektvollen Schreiben über indigene Identitäten gehört es, Verallgemeinerungen wo immer möglich zu vermeiden, denn "die" Indigenen gibt es nicht. In der Zusammenarbeit mit indigenen Communities haben Beziehung und Vertrauen eine zentrale Bedeutung (vgl. Grundsatz 9), klischeehafte Darstellungen haben darin keinen Platz und sind kontraproduktiv. Es gilt vielmehr, der Vielfältigkeit der "indigenen Stimmen" und ihres kulturellen Reichtums gerecht zu werden. Gregory Younging schafft es, mit seinem fabelhaften Buch auch Menschen, die sich noch nicht viel mit dieser Thematik befassten, für die Bedeutung kulturell angemessenen Schreibens und Agierens zu sensibilisieren. Kulturelle Aneignung ist in mitteleuropäischen, vornehmlich "linken" Diskursen zwar ein viel zu hörendes Stichwort, oft aber von wenig Kenntnis getrübt und eher im moralisierenden Tonfall vorgetragen: die Überzeugung der "richtigen Seite" wird so ein Einfallstor für neue Ausgrenzungen. Younging schafft es hingegen, auf relativ wenigen Buchseiten eine Dichte an Informationen zusammenzutragen, die über die Frage angemessenen Schreibens hinaus auch notwendige Debatten mit zahlreichen wohlbegründeten Argumenten befruchten kann.
