Original publisher's green cloth - gilt embossed to the spines and to the front boards with an attractive art nouveau design embossed in the cloth of each spine and front board. The volumes are bound in finely ribbed cloth. Each volume with tissue-guarded frontispiece and around a further four tissue-guarded plates to each volume - as called for. There are also fold-out charts and numerous musical notes. All plates as called-for. Each volume in very good or very good plus, clean and tight condition. No inscriptions. A slight rub mark to the front paste-down and endpaper of volume 5. Light rubbing to the cloth at the tail of the spine of volume 5. A number of board corners are a little bumped or turned in. A very good, well preserved set.

The corners and spine ends are all bumped and rubbed, all the cover edges are shelf rubbed, and the endpapers in each volume are also foxed; the spines are each slanted forwards to a varying degree. Illustrated with a Gallery of Authentic Portraits, and Illustrations After Wilkie, Duncan, Faed, Harvey, Bough, and Others. Profusely illustrated besides, and also includes the musical notation for every song. No date, but ca. 1890's. Vol. 1, the front cover is badly darkened and spotted with tiny dots all around the top and side edges of that cover, and is faded; 119 pages. Vol. 2, said wear, plus a dark smudge in the margin of pg. 238; numbered in continuation, so begins with 121 and ends at 239. Vol. 3, said wear, plus a terrible forked line in thick black for a length of over 7 inches upon the front cover; there is an inch wide black stain to the top edge of the rear cover which has badly bled thru to the top edges of the last pages; there is a crack at the titlepage but it is holding reasonably firm; there is another crack at pg. 288, holding as well; numbered in continuation, beginning with 241 and ends at 359. Vol. 4, said wear, plus the front inner joint is cracked but holding; the rear inner joint is much more heavily cracked, so the netting is exposed; one of the plates has come loose and is kept at the back of the book; there are several cracks throughout the text but they are holding so far; many of the page edges are dirty with fingerprints; numbered individually, so 128 pages. Vol. 5, said wear, plus the bottom half of the front inner joint is cracked; there are fingerprints around the page edges but in a far less degree than the previous volume; numbered in continuation, so begins with 129, and ends at 274. Vol. 6, said wear, plus the inner joint at the titlepage is cracked, but holding; there are heavy fingerprints around the bottom edge of the titlepage; numbered in continuation, so begins with 275 and ends at 422. Includes a Glossary, and an Index of the set. Book.
