The frontispiece and three internal illustrations -- all signed "Gretter," and thus unusual) are all line drawings on matte (not glossy) stock. 211 pp. followed by one page publisher's ads. The green cover has black titles and stamped black and red decorative pictures of a train, plane and a ship; the spine titles are in black. The corners are bumped and worn as are the edges, there is a 2" rip to the spine on the front edge and there is a tear at the top of the spine at rear edge of 1". The end papers are decorated in red and tan with a modern city in the back ground and a covered wagon in the fore ground, with a property of Topsfield, Mass. The interior is age yellowed and has some corners bent and wonderful colored pictures through out. see our other childhood readers.

This appears to be printing 1943A-11 of the 13th Hardy Boys adventure, as per the fifth edition of Carpentieri. (You may, of course, buy if you wish from booksellers who let their computers list every printing of this book as "published 1934.") Twenty-one HBs (through "Broken Blade", January, 1942) to front flap, which is price-coded to reflect the wartime price-fixing scheme "P.C.J." Copyright page lists 13 HBs through this title; jacket rear flap lists 20 Ted Scotts through "Pursuit Patrol" (1943); jacket rear panel offers 14 X-Bar-X Boys through "With the Secret Rangers" (1936.) Glossy frontispiece and jacket art are both signed (though of course not HAND-signed) "Gretta." Pages show considerable age-browning, mostly to edges, but are still flexible & easily read. Book will close its own boards as well as its text block, but there are a few rough spots to rear board. Jacket somewhat sun-faded to spine, and is missing a half-inch chip to top of spine. 219 pp. Here reduced from $165. (NOT signed by Franklin W. Dixon.).

Bound in green cloth with titles and rules stamped in black. No illustrations. Reprint circa 1930 listing 4 titles on the rear flap of the dust wrapper. This copy lacks the requisite illustrated endpapers and 8 pages of aerial acrobatics found at the rear of the first edition, which also has blue cloth and cover lettering stamped in gilt. There are no ads at the rear. The cloth shows only a hint of edgewear; the dust jacket has moderate edgewear with shallow chipping at the head and heel, and a 1" chip to the lower front panel at the spine. Former owner's info in ink to the front pastedown, with later pencil inscription to the ffe. Hinges solid; binding square. A clean, tight copy, with the wrapper now in mylar. The jacket art is not signed, but it is clearly Gretter's work. He became established at R&L in 1927 and worked there until moving to NY in 1932, when he began signing his work as "J. Clemens Gretta". Mattson & Davis 01625.
