Having grown up in Harpenden, this is an absolute delight to stumble across such a rich vein of its history, when Grey's story starts in 1872 he is just 13 years old and has left school to become a "grass picker" at the station, when Harpenden was known as Arden, and "the village then had an almost entirely agricultural population".
